Medical Description
Omnacortil 10 Tablet is a prescription corticosteroid medicine used to manage a wide range of health conditions that involve inflammation, immune system overactivity, or allergic reactions. It is commonly prescribed for allergic conditions such as asthma, severe allergic rhinitis, and eczema, as well as for autoimmune and inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and certain skin conditions. It may also be used in kidney diseases such as nephrotic syndrome, in lung disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and in various rheumatic and connective tissue diseases. In some cases, it is given alongside appropriate antimicrobial treatment for specific infections where inflammation needs to be controlled.
The active ingredient in Omnacortil 10 Tablet is prednisolone, a synthetic corticosteroid that mimics the action of natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Prednisolone works by suppressing overactive immune responses and reducing inflammation in affected tissues. This action helps relieve symptoms such as swelling, redness, itching, and pain, while also preventing damage caused by chronic inflammation. In transplant medicine, it plays an important role in preventing the immune system from rejecting a transplanted organ. In oncology, it may be part of treatment regimens for certain cancers, such as leukaemia and lymphoma, where immune suppression is beneficial.
Wysolone 10 tablet is another brand that contains prednisolone as its active component. Both Omnacortil and Wysolone work in the same way and are generally interchangeable when prescribed by a doctor. The choice between brands often depends on availability, patient tolerance, and prescribing preference. To achieve the best results, prednisolone should be taken exactly as prescribed, at the correct dose and time, and for the full duration advised by the doctor. Sudden discontinuation is not recommended, as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms, a flare-up of the underlying condition, or adrenal insufficiency due to the body’s reduced natural steroid production.
While taking prednisolone, it is important to follow certain precautions. Live vaccines should be avoided because the medicine can weaken the immune response, making the vaccine less effective and increasing the risk of infection. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all other medicines they are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and supplements, as prednisolone can interact with many medications, including those for diabetes, blood pressure, blood thinning, and fungal infections. Regular monitoring of blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and bone health may be recommended during long-term therapy.
Prednisolone can cause side effects, particularly when used for extended periods or at high doses. These may include increased appetite, weight gain, mood changes, higher susceptibility to infections, indigestion, and changes in skin appearance. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cataracts, glaucoma, and hormonal imbalances. Therefore, patients should be closely supervised by their healthcare provider, and the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest possible time. A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, regular exercise, and stress management, can help reduce some of the potential risks associated with corticosteroid therapy.
