Medical Description

Pneumovax 23 Vaccine provides active immunisation against invasive diseases, pneumonia, and acute otitis media caused by 23 specific serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19F, 19A, 20, 22F, 23F, and 33F). It is suitable for infants, children, and adolescents aged 6 weeks to 17 years, as well as for adults aged 18 and older, including the elderly. When you or your child receive the vaccine, the body’s immune system generates antibodies that aid in defending against pneumococcal infections.

Common side effects of the vaccine may include pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site; fever; drowsiness; irritability; and loss of appetite. These side effects typically resolve quickly, and sitting or lying down may help alleviate them. If any side effects persist or cause concern, consult your doctor.

Avoid Pneumovax 23 Vaccine if you are allergic to any of its components, have a severe illness, or have a high fever. It is also not recommended for individuals with a compromised immune system.

Always inform your doctor of any allergies or medical conditions before receiving the vaccine. Certain medications may interact with Pneumovax 23 Vaccine, so it is important to inform your doctor if you are taking other medications.

Dosage

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Pneumovax injection stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies against 23 specific serotypes of pneumococcal bacteria. It contains purified capsular polysaccharides from these serotypes, which serve as antigens. When injected, these antigens trigger an immune response, resulting in the production of type-specific antibodies. This antibody production helps protect against pneumococcal disease by enabling the body to recognise and neutralise the bacteria upon future exposure.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Pneumovax injection may not work as well when combined with immune-suppressing medications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Pneumovax injection is generally appropriate for children and adults. However, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

The Pneumovax shot is a 0.5 mL injection administered by a doctor or nurse, either into a muscle (usually the upper arm or thigh) or just under the skin. It must not be given into a blood vessel or the top layer of skin.

No, the Pneumovax injection is not intended for children under the age of 2. This is because the immune systems of very young children are not sufficiently developed to respond effectively to this specific vaccine, which means it would not provide adequate protection.

It is suitable for infants, children, and adolescents aged 6 weeks to 17 years, as well as for adults aged 18 and older, including the elderly.

It helps protect against infections caused by pneumococcal bacteria, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections.

Usually, a single dose is given. Some individuals at higher risk may need a booster dose after a few years, as advised by the doctor.

It is recommended for older adults, people with chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart, lung, or kidney disease, and those with weakened immune systems.
