Medical Description

Lonazep 2 is a prescription medication. The pharmacological component of Lonazep 2 is Clonazepam 2 mg. Treatment of seizure disorders (epilepsy) and panic disorder are the main uses of Lonazep 2. Epilepsy is a condition in which an alteration in brain signals results in seizures or a sudden change of behaviour. This increased brain activity can have many different consequences. In Petit Mal epilepsy, also known as absence seizures, there is a sudden loss of focus and consciousness for a brief period. This can be accompanied by abnormal muscle movements. Lonazep 2 works by acting on the brain pathways and increasing the action of a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Clonazepam binds to the receptors of GABA in the brain and increases its activity. This results in sedation, calming effects, muscle relaxation, etc. The medication should be taken as recommended by the doctor. It is generally advisable to take the tablet at the same time every day as this ensures the best action of the medication. Side effects of Lonazep 2 include lethargy, fatigue, sleepiness, impaired coordination and balance, blurred vision, and confusion. Lonazep 2 has habit-forming potential and may be misused. Directions for use of Lonazep 2 should be strictly followed, and careful monitoring while on this medication is required and necessary. It is also important to note that this medicine should not be abruptly stopped as it may cause withdrawal effects in users, which may be serious.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Clonazepam belongs to a group of agents called benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines mainly act on the brain pathways and increase the action of a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Clonazepam binds to the receptors of GABA in the brain and increases the activity of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). This results in sedation, calming effects, muscle relaxation, etc. Clonazepam also increases the levels of another neurotransmitter called serotonin in the brain by increasing its synthesis.

  • Medications that affect the metabolism of Lonazep 2 can increase plasma concentrations of alprazolam, leading to increased side effects. Such medicines should not be used concomitantly. Examples include azole antifungals (ketoconazole), cimetidine, certain antidepressants (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and nefazodone), macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin), seizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin), antihistamines and muscle relaxants.
