Medical Description

EYEVIR eye ointment is used to treat acute herpes simplex infection of the cornea. Its active ingredient is acyclovir.

Uses

  • Herpes simplex keratitis

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, including acyclovir or valacyclovir, do not use it. Do not use an eye ointment on another body area unless your doctor advises it.

Tell your eye doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or could become pregnant. Use this medicine only after an individual benefit and risk assessment.

Vision may be blurred briefly after application. Do not drive until your vision is clear.

Alcohol is not expected to affect this eye ointment, but ask your doctor if you have concerns.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands. Gently pull down the lower eyelid and apply the prescribed ribbon inside the affected eye without touching the tip to the eye or eyelashes. Close the eye gently and wash your hands again. Do not wear contact lenses while the eye is infected or during treatment unless your eye doctor advises it.

Storage and disposal

Store the ointment as directed on the label, tightly closed and away from heat and children. Do not share the tube.

Overdose

If too much enters the eye, wipe away the excess and seek advice if irritation is severe. If you think you have swallowed too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

Acyclovir blocks the ability of the herpes simplex virus to copy its genetic material, helping the eye infection heal.
