Medical Description

Ertycin L Tablet is an antibiotic medication. It contains a combination of azithromycin and levofloxacin as active substances. Ertycin L Tablet is used in the treatment of bacterial infections of the sinuses, lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract, prostate gland, ear, throat (tonsillitis, pharyngitis), skin, and soft tissue. This medicine works by preventing further growth as well as killing the infection-causing bacteria. Take Ertycin L Tablet in the exact dose and duration as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine on your own. Before starting Ertycin L Tablet, inform your doctor if you are pregnant/breastfeeding and about your complete medical history.

Uses

  • Ertycin L Tablet is used in the treatment of bacterial infections of:
  • • sinuses,
  • • lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia),
  • • urinary tract,
  • • prostate gland,
  • • ear,
  • • throat (tonsillitis, pharyngitis),
  • • skin, and
  • • soft tissue.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to levofloxacin, azithromycin, erythromycin, or to any of the other ingredients of Ertycin L Tablet.
  • If you are allergic to any other quinolone antibiotics such as moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics. If you are not sure what these medicines are, please confirm with your doctor.
  • If you have a history of fits/seizures.
  • If you have a history of problems with your tendons such as tendonitis that was related to treatment with a quinolone antibiotic.
  • If you are a child or a growing adolescent.
  • If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have experienced any side effects in the past like skin rashes, skin peeling, blistering and/or mouth sores when taking a quinolone or a fluoroquinolone.
  • You are 60 years of age or older.
  • You are taking medicines called corticosteroids or ergotamine derivatives.
  • You have had fits/seizures in the past.
  • You are elderly (above 60 years of age) or have received an organ transplant.
  • You have had damage to your brain due to a stroke or other brain injury.
  • You have kidney or liver problems.
  • You have a condition called glucose – 6 – phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
  • You had mental health problems.
  • You have a history of heart problems, like if you were born with or have a family history of the prolonged QT interval, salt imbalance in the blood, very slow heart rhythm, heart failure, or a history of a heart attack.
  • You are female or elderly or you are taking other medicines that result in abnormal ECG changes.
  • You have or have a family history of an enlargement or "bulge" of a large blood vessel - a condition called aortic aneurysm or large vessel peripheral aneurysm.
  • You have had a tear in the aorta wall.
  • You have leaking heart valves (heart valve regurgitation).
  • You have a family history of aortic dissection or congenital heart valve disease, or other conditions like connective tissue disorders, vascular disorders, or endocarditis.
  • You are diabetic.
  • You have a condition called myasthenia gravis.
  • You experience sudden, severe pain in your abdomen, chest or back.
  • You experience shortness of breath, swelling of your ankles, feet, or abdomen, or heart palpitations.
  • You develop skin reactions like reddish spots or circular patches, rashes, ulcers of the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, fever and/or flu-like symptoms.
  • You develop pain and swelling in the joints and inflammation or rupture of tendons.
  • You start having severe, persistent, and/or bloody diarrhoea during or after treatment with Ertycin L Tablet.
  • You are going to be exposed to strong sunlight for long durations.

Directions for Use

  • Take Ertycin L Tablet as a whole with sufficient water.
  • Always take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Do not cut, break, or chew the medicine.
  • Do not consume more than the prescribed dose.
  • Do not discontinue the medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.

Storage and disposal

  • Store Ertycin L Tablet in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose of Ertycin L Tablet include dizziness, confusion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and loss of hearing. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

You should never miss your dose of antibiotics as it may increase your risk of re-infection. If you missed any dose of Ertycin L Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

  • Ertycin L Tablet contains a combination of azithromycin and levofloxacin as active substances.
  • Azithromycin prevents the protein synthesis in the bacteria which kills or inhibits the growth of infection-causing bacteria.
  • Levofloxacin prevents bacteria from producing certain chemicals that are essential for bacterial growth and reproduction. This results in the death of the bacteria that cause infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way Ertycin L Tablet works, or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Inform your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
  • Do not take Ertycin L Tablet if you are taking medicines derived from ergots like dihydroergotamine, ergonovine (used for migraine headaches and to prevent excessive bleeding after childbirth), iron tablets (for treating anaemia), zinc supplements, magnesium or aluminium-containing antacids (for the treatment of acidity or heartburn), and didanosine or sucralfate (for treating stomach ulcers).
  • Particular care should be taken if you are taking atorvastatin (for treating abnormal/high cholesterol levels), hydroxychloroquine (used to treat malaria), corticosteroids (used for treating inflammation), warfarin (used to thin the blood), theophylline (used for breathing problems like asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen (used for the treatment of pain and inflammation), ciclosporin (used after organ transplants to prevent rejection), medicines used for treating abnormal heart rhythm (quinidine, disopyramide, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide, amiodarone), for heart failure (digoxin), for depression (tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline and imipramine), for psychiatric disorders (antipsychotics), and for treating bacterial infections (macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, azithromycin, and clarithromycin), probenecid (used for the treatment of gout), cisapride (used for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease), and cimetidine (used for treating ulcers and heartburn).
