Medical Description
Alprocontin tablet treats generalised anxiety and panic disorders in adults and adolescents above 18. This medicine contains alprazolam that belongs to the group of medications called benzodiazepines.
Alprocontin binds to some sites and enhances the effect of a chemical in the brain. This chemical is responsible for blocking the passing of those messages in the brain cells related to mood extremes. It helps the brain elicit appropriate responses to fear, tension, and anxiety situations. Alprocontin balances its levels and brings calmness to mind, and relieves anxiety.
Side effects of Alprocontin tablet include sleepiness, headache, nervousness, constipation, unsteadiness and blurring of vision.
Alprocontin tablets should be given with caution in older adults as they are more sensitive to the usual dose. This may cause excessive sleepiness and unsteady walking in them. This medicine should not be given to children and adolescents under 18 as safety has not been established. While stopping Alprocontin, care should be taken to withdraw it gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms or relapse of symptoms.
Stopping it abruptly may cause anxiety, confusion, headache and tremors. Alprocontin has the potential of dependency on it. It should be taken only for the period and dose as advised by the doctor.

Contraindications
- If you have had an allergic reaction to Alprocontin or any of its active/inactive ingredients in the past.
- If you have abnormal weakness of muscles (Myasthenia gravis).
- If you have severe liver disease or breathing problems.
- If you are under 18.

Directions for Use
- Alprocontin tablet is to be taken by mouth with a glass of water.
- Swallow the medicine whole with or without food.
- Follow the doctor's instructions about the time and dose of the medicine.
Storage and disposal
Alprocontin tablets should be stored at a temperature between 15 to 250 C. Keep the tablets in their packing in a cool place away from light and moisture. It should be safely kept so that children and pets cannot reach it. Leftover tablets should be disposed of safely not to be consumed accidentally by someone.

Overdose
The symptoms of overdose of Alprocontin tablet are excessive sleepiness, unsteady movements, confusion, coordination problems, restlessness, serious problem in breathing, tremors and loss of consciousness. In the case of an overdose, visit the nearest hospital.
Missed a Dose
Take the tablet if you have missed a dose near the actual time of that dose. If you are taking multiple doses a day and remember the missed dose near the time of the next dose, then skip the missed dose. You should not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

How Does It Work?
Alprocontin tablet acts by binding to certain sites in the brain. This increases the action of a chemical in the brain responsible for stopping the messages related to the extremes of mood. The enhancement of its action by Alprocontin helps better process the information received by the brain cells in stressful situations. This action keeps the brain calm and protects it from getting into a panic and anxious response.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Medicines of the group opioids such as oxycodone, codeine and fentanyl may cause life-threatening side effects if given along with Alprocontin. This may result in severe breathing problems and coma.
- Medicines used for contraception increase the levels of Alprocontin in the blood. This requires adjustment of the dose of Alprocontin.
- Medicines used to treat acidities, such as cimetidine and ranitidine, increase the effect of Alprocontin tablet. The dose of Alprocontin should be reduced.
- Medicines used to treat seizures such as carbamazepine may decrease the effectiveness of Alprocontin when given together.
- Medicines used to treat depression such as nefazodone, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine and imipramine increase the effect of Alprocontin tablets. The dose of Alprocontin should be reduced when prescribed with these medicines.
- Medicines used to treat fungal infections such as itraconazole and ketoconazole increase the Alprocontin tablet's effect.
- Medicines used to treat bacterial and viral infections such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, and ritonavir increase the impact of Alprocontin tablets.
- Medicine used in treating tuberculosis, such as isoniazid, may interact with the Alprocontin tablet.
- Medicine used for heart conditions such as digoxin may produce toxic effects when given with Alprocontin.
Interactions with food items
- You can continue to have your usual food unless your doctor has given you some suggestions to change your diet.
