Medical Description

Xtrapred eye drop is a medication that belongs to the steroid class. It is used to treat redness and swelling in the eyes caused by infections or allergies. This medication helps relieve redness, itching, and soreness by inhibiting the release of substances in the body that trigger inflammation.

Before using Xtrapred eye drop for the first time, make sure the seal is intact. To use it, wash your hands thoroughly and shake the bottle well before each application. If you wear contact lenses, remove them and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them after using the eye drops.

Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor, as discontinuing it prematurely may allow bacteria to continue growing, leading to a recurrence of the infection. The most common side effects of Xtrapred eye drop may include a burning sensation, irritation, watery eyes, or temporary blurred vision. If you experience blurred vision or any significant changes in your eyesight, refrain from driving until your vision returns to normal.

As Xtrapred eye drop is meant for external application, instances of overdose are unlikely. However, in the event of accidental ingestion, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. If you have applied an excess amount, please remove the surplus medicine with tissue or cotton.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of your eye drops, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra drops to make up for the missed dose.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Xtrapred eye drop works by blocking the production of particular chemical messengers that cause the eye to become red, swollen, and itchy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Using medications that block an enzyme called CYP3A, such as cobicistat-containing products, can increase the amount of steroid absorbed into the body. This raises the risk of serious steroid side effects, including weight gain, swelling, mood changes, or high blood pressure.
  • Combining these eye drops with CYP3A inhibitors should generally be avoided unless absolutely necessary. In such cases, close monitoring by your doctor is crucial to detect any potential side effects.
  • Always share a complete list of all medications you're taking with your doctor or pharmacist to help prevent harmful interactions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. Remove contact lenses before using the drops, and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

The duration depends on your condition. Some individuals may require them for only a few days, while others might need a longer treatment period. Always adhere to your doctor’s advice. Never discontinue or prolong use without guidance, as sudden withdrawal after extended use can exacerbate inflammation.

These drops may be prescribed for children, but only under strict medical supervision, as children might be more sensitive to the side effects of corticosteroids.
