Medical Description

Uft capsule contains a combination of active pharmaceutical ingredients: tegafur and uracil (often in a 1:4 ratio). It belongs to the fluoropyrimidine antimetabolite class.

Inside your body, tegafur is gradually converted into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), an active chemotherapy drug that targets rapidly growing cancer cells. Uracil is added to inhibit the breakdown of 5-FU by dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) in your liver and tissues. By reducing 5-FU degradation, uracil allows higher, more consistent levels of the medicine to remain in your bloodstream, enhancing its antitumour activity when taken by mouth.

Uft capsule is used to manage colorectal cancer, particularly metastatic colorectal cancer, often in combination with calcium folinate (leucovorin).

Because Uft capsule can affect the bone marrow and gastrointestinal tract, an oncologist manages your treatment under strict supervision, with regular blood tests and health monitoring.

Uses

First-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer, often in combination with calcium folinate (leucovorin).

Contraindications

  • If you have a known severe allergy or hypersensitivity to tegafur, uracil, 5-fluorouracil, or any ingredients in this medicine.
  • If you have known complete dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme deficiency.
  • If you have severe liver or kidney impairment.
  • If you are currently taking, or have recently taken, antiviral medicines such as brivudine or sorivudine, or related medicines that strongly inhibit DPD.
  • If you have severe, active infections or severely reduced bone marrow function before starting treatment.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Side effects

Very Common Side Effects
  • Low white blood cell count, risking infections
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia), causing fatigue, pale skin, and weakness
  • Low platelet count, leading to easy bruising or unexpected bleeding
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and stomach cramps
  • Inflammation or painful sores in the mouth, tongue, or lips (stomatitis/mucositis)
  • General tiredness, weakness, and temporary hair thinning
Other Commonly Reported Side Effects
  • Darkening of the skin or nails (hyperpigmentation)
  • Redness, swelling, or peeling on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (Hand-Foot Syndrome)
  • Dizziness, headache, or difficulty sleeping
  • Dry skin, mild rash, or itching
  • Changes in taste or dry mouth
Serious Side Effects Requiring Immediate Medical Attention
  • Severe Diarrhea: Having frequent, watery bowel movements that lead to severe dehydration, weakness, or dizziness.
  • Severe Infections: High fever with shaking chills, sore throat, or burning during urination while your white blood cell count is low.
  • Severe Mouth Sores: Painful ulcers or swelling in the mouth that prevent you from eating or drinking fluids.
  • Unusual Bleeding: Frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in vomit, or dark, tarry stools.
  • Liver Problems: Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine, or severe upper right stomach pain.

Directions for Use

  • Take Uft capsule strictly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water. Do not open, crush, or chew them.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling the capsule.
  • Complete the full treatment cycle and rest periods exactly as your oncologist advises.

Storage and disposal

  • Store the capsule at room temperature away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
  • Keep the container tightly closed in its original packaging, out of reach of children and pets.
  • Because this is a hazardous chemotherapy medicine, return any unused or expired capsule to your oncology clinic or pharmacist for safe biohazard disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Keep all scheduled blood test appointments so your doctor can safely monitor your white blood cells, platelets, and liver function.
  • Report any fever, severe diarrhea, painful mouth sores, or unusual bruising to your doctor immediately.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene using a soft-bristled toothbrush to help prevent mouth ulcers.
  • Apply moisturizer to your hands and feet to soothe treatment-related skin dryness.
  • Both men and women must use effective birth control during treatment and for a prescribed period after the final dose.

Dosage

Overdose

In the event of an accidental overdose, contact emergency medical services immediately. An overdose can cause severe bone marrow suppression, intense diarrhea, gastrointestinal ulceration, and severe bleeding.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose, contact your doctor or oncology team for advice. Do not take an extra or double dose to make up for a missed dose unless your doctor specifically instructs you to.

How does this medicine work?

Uft capsule contains tegafur and uracil. The body converts tegafur into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which interferes with DNA and RNA synthesis and prevents cancer cells from growing and multiplying.Uracil inhibits dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD), the main enzyme that breaks down 5-FU. This helps maintain effective 5-FU levels for longer and enhances its anticancer activity.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Antiviral Drugs: Medicines like sorivudine or brivudine are strictly contraindicated because they dangerously increase tegafur toxicity by inhibiting DPD and reducing 5-FU breakdown.
  • Blood Thinners: Warfarin or other anticoagulants can significantly increase bleeding risk; closely monitor your clotting time (INR).
  • Antiepileptic Drugs: May increase phenytoin blood levels and require dose adjustments.
  • Folic Acid / Folinate: Calcium folinate enhances the activity and therapeutic effect of tegafur, but can also increase gastrointestinal side effects.
  • Live Vaccines: Avoid live vaccines during treatment, as your weakened immune system may not respond safely.

Interactions with food items

  • Uft capsule may be taken with or without food, depending on the specific product instructions.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (water, clear broths) throughout the day to stay hydrated, especially if you experience mild diarrhea or nausea.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol during treatment, especially if you have liver problems or significant treatment-related nausea.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Uft capsule may be taken with or without food, depending on the specific product instructions. Follow the instructions provided by your oncologist or on the product label.
Inform your doctor right away. They may prescribe anti-diarrheal medications, recommend oral rehydration fluids, or adjust your dose to prevent severe dehydration.
Even when taken at home, Uft capsule lowers your blood cell counts. Regular blood tests ensure your body recovers safely between treatment cycles.
DPD (dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase) is an enzyme that helps break down fluoropyrimidine medicines. People with complete DPD deficiency cannot properly process these medicines and are at high risk of severe or potentially life-threatening toxicity. Those with partial DPD deficiency may also have an increased risk of toxicity and may require dose adjustment and closer monitoring.
Always check with your oncologist before taking any new over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or herbal supplements, as some medications (like certain pain relievers or blood thinners) can interact with chemotherapy.
