Supridol injection is a prescription medicine used for treating moderate to severe pain. It comprises tramadol as its active component. It belongs to the class of opioid or narcotic pain relievers. It can be used to address localized or general pain. It is a medicine given for relieving chronic, persistent, and moderate to severe pain.
Pain occurs when several chemicals in the body are released due to an injury. These chemical substances cause the brain to send signals to the body part with the injury to notify that something is wrong. Supridol injection helps block these brain signals from reaching the site of injury. Some of the other uses of Supridol injection include reducing discomfort due to pain to rest better.
It is considered a safe medication for pain when taken in the prescribed manner. Some people can experience withdrawal effects with this medication after long-term use. - If you have intestinal obstructions, like paralytic ileus. Supridol injection worsens the condition
- If you are suffering from breathing issues like asthma and other lung conditions
- Your body has been in shock, and sufficient blood is not being pumped to all body parts
- Not for children below 17 years of age, as this injection contains tramadol, an opioid that is contraindicated in children

Storage and disposal

Overdose
Supridol injection overdose can cause stomach pain, lightheadedness, fainting, vomiting, seizures (fits), low blood sugar levels, sweating, heart attack, lethargy, low blood pressure, yellow skin and eyes (liver problems), confusion, and loss of consciousness. In case of Supridol injection overdose, seek immediate medical treatment from the nearest medical centre.
Missed a Dose
If you are taking this injection at home and have missed a dose of Supridol injection, you can take it as soon as you remember. But, skip the missed injection if it's already time for the next injection. Do not take two doses of this injection at a time, as it can lead to an overdose.
If you are taking this injection in a hospital or clinical setting, then try to go for every dose and follow all the instructions given by your doctor. If you have missed a dose, call your doctor and set up a new appointment as soon as possible.

How Does It Work?
Supridol injection contains tramadol as its active ingredient. It is an opioid pain reliever. It acts on the nervous system. Tramadol works by stopping the transmission of pain signals from nerves in the brain to the place of injury. It blocks these pain pathways in the nervous system by binding certain receptors. It also increases the production of norepinephrine and serotonin, the chemical messengers responsible for reducing pain and inducing a calming effect in the body.
Tramadol also mimics the action of endorphins, the chemical substance in the brain and spinal cord that elevates mood and reduces pain.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Do not take the Supridol injection if you are using other similar opioid pain medications, as they can cause serious adverse effects
- Do not take Supridol injection if you are on antidepressants such as linezolid, naltrexone, methylene blue, etc. (MAO inhibitors). They can increase the severity of side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, tremors, lethargy, vomitings, etc.
- Do not take Supridol injection with antihistamines (allergy medicines) like cetirizine and diphenhydramine, muscle relaxants, sleeping pills, etc., as they can increase the effect of drowsiness.
