Medical Description

Phyllocontin is a tablet containing aminophylline, used to prevent symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine or similar xanthine medicines, do not take it. Tell your doctor if you have heart rhythm problems, seizures, liver or kidney disease, an overactive thyroid, stomach ulcer, or a history of heavy smoking.

Too much may cause repeated vomiting, severe palpitations, tremor, seizures, or dangerous heart-rhythm changes. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

Take a missed dose when remembered unless the next scheduled dose is near. Do not take extra aminophylline. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Aminophylline relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping them open. It can reduce airway narrowing but does not replace a fast-acting inhaler for sudden breathing difficulty.

Some medicines can affect the way aminophylline works or raise its level in the body. Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use. In particular, if you use caffeine products, other xanthines, macrolide antibiotics, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, or seizure medicines, ask about interactions.
