Medical Description

The Octamop lotion is used together with controlled ultraviolet light treatment to manage vitiligo, a skin condition causing pale, colourless patches on the skin. Its active ingredient is methoxsalen, which makes the treated skin more responsive to ultraviolet light so that the light therapy can work.

Uses

  • Vitiligo (loss of skin colour in patches)
  • Repigmenting pale skin areas with light therapy

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. It should not be used if your skin reacts strongly to light, or if you have a condition that makes you very sensitive to sunlight. Tell your doctor if you have or have had any skin growths, or an eye condition where the natural lens has been removed. It must never be used for tanning or for cosmetic reasons.

  • Itching
  • Burning sensation
  • Blistering
  • Darkening of the skin

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

This medicine is best avoided during pregnancy, as there is not enough information on its safety for the developing baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy so a safer option can be chosen.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

It is not clearly known how this medicine affects a breastfed baby. Use it while breastfeeding only if your doctor advises, and discuss the safest choice with them.

Driving

Driving

This medicine does not usually affect your ability to drive. As it can make your eyes more sensitive to light, wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet light when you are outdoors.

Alcohol

Alcohol

It is not known how alcohol affects this medicine. If you have any concerns, speak with your doctor.

Directions for Use

For external use only, apply on healthy skin free from cuts and wounds, and only to the areas your doctor has marked out. In most cases a doctor or nurse applies this lotion in the clinic, usually just before your planned light therapy session. Do not put it on unaffected skin, as that skin can burn easily in the light. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, and nostrils, and wash the treated area with soap and water after the light session if your doctor advises.

Storage and disposal

Store this lotion at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Keep the cap tightly closed and check the liquid before use, discarding it if it looks cloudy or discoloured. Keep it out of the reach of children.

Quick Tips

  • Keep treated skin covered and away from sunlight for a full day after each application
  • Wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and wrap-around sunglasses outdoors
  • Use a high-protection sunscreen on exposed skin
  • Apply only to the areas your doctor has marked
  • Keep all your clinic appointments so the timing stays right

Dosage

Overdose

Using too much of this lotion, or getting too much light after applying it, can cause severe burning and blistering of the skin. Wash off any extra medicine with cool water and soap. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

This treatment follows a strict schedule tied to your light therapy sessions. If you miss an application or a session, contact your clinic to rebook rather than making it up on your own. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Methoxsalen makes the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light. When the treated area is exposed to controlled ultraviolet light under medical care, the medicine becomes active and works on the skin cells. It encourages the cells that give skin its colour to darken the pale patches of vitiligo so they blend with the surrounding skin.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way this lotion works and can make your skin much more sensitive to light. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use. In particular, mention any medicines that increase sensitivity to sunlight, such as certain water pills or some antibiotics, and any other skin treatments like coal tar, as these can raise the risk of burns when used together.

Interactions with food items

Some foods naturally contain substances that increase skin sensitivity to light. If you regularly eat large amounts of limes, figs, parsley, celery, carrots, or mustard, tell your doctor, as they may add to the effect of this medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. Your skin stays very sensitive to light for at least a day after each application, so it can burn easily. Cover the skin, use sunscreen, and avoid sunlight and sunlamps as your doctor advises.
Skin changes usually appear slowly. It often takes several weeks of regular light therapy sessions before you notice a visible difference. Your doctor will guide you on your own plan.
No. It should never be used for tanning or for cosmetic purposes. It is meant only for the skin conditions your doctor has prescribed it for, along with controlled light therapy.
It is generally not recommended for children. If your child has a skin condition, speak to their doctor, who will decide on a suitable option.
