Medical Description

Nitravet is a medication used to manage Insomnia. It contains Nitrazepam, the active ingredient. It belongs to a family of chemicals that act on the few centres of the brain that promotes wakefulness. By decreasing the activity of these centres, the chemical creates a state of calm and relaxation. This helps you to fall asleep. It is beneficial to maintain sleep if you are prone to frequent nighttime awakenings. Insomnia is a common sleep condition. It involves either difficulty in falling asleep or the inability to maintain a good night’s sleep. It can get very frustrating. Long-term Insomnia can lead to mood and behaviour changes, anger, fatigue and increased blood pressure. Nitravet has some side effects, such as excessive daytime sleepiness, sedation, impaired coordination, dizziness and fatigue. Seek medical attention if any of these symptoms occur. It is important to use this medicine with caution in patients with liver disease, kidney disease or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Nitravet should not be consumed with alcohol. Nitravet is a habit-forming drug and should not be taken without medical consultation and prescription.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Nitravet contains Nitrazepam which may be unsafe during pregnancy. It may cause problems in the development of the foetus. However, there are not enough studies to prove this. Therefore the medication should be started only after consultation with the doctor. Do not start the drug without the advice of your medical practitioner.

Breast Feeding

Nitravet contains Nitrazepam which, may be unsafe during breastfeeding. The Nitrazepam may pass into the breast milk. Although there are not enough studies to prove that this drug is not safe, avoid using Nitravet in a breastfeeding mother without the consultation of the medical practitioner.

Driving

Nitrazepam in Nitravet may lead to drowsiness. This may be unsafe during driving. Professional drivers should avoid taking the medication. If, after taking the medication, you feel drowsy, then avoid driving.

Alcohol

Nitravet contains Nitrazepam which interacts with alcohol. Therefore, consuming alcohol is unsafe with Nitravet.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.
You have been taking this medicine for a long time.
You notice a rash or other skin changes.

Directions for Use

Take the tablet orally.
Swallow the whole tablet.
Do not be crushed into powder, chewed or taken in parts.
The dose and duration should not exceed the prescription.
It should be taken at a fixed time in the day.
Take this medicine before or after meals.

Storage and disposal

The medication needs to be stored in a cool and dry place. Since the medication has addictive potential, the tablets should be kept securely and away from the reach of children. If the medication needs to be disposed of, mix it with non-consumable substances and seal it in a plastic bag.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a Nitravet dose, consume the next dose when you recall. Do not take two tablets together to compensate for the missed dose. After finishing the missed dose, continue the medication as per the schedule.

How Does It Work?

Nitrazepam is the active ingredient of Nitravet. Nitrazepam belongs to the class of drugs known as Benzodiazepines. The chemical acts in specific centres of the midbrain that maintain wakefulness. Nitrazepam decreases the activity of these centres and hence promotes sleep. This helps treat Insomnia or the inability to get a healthy sleep schedule.
