Medical Description

Depsol tablet is used to treat major depressive disorders. It can also be used to treat nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting at night) in children six years and older. Major depressive disorder or depression is a mood disorder characterised by sadness, loss of interest, mood swings, hopelessness and loneliness. Depsol tablet contains Imipramine as the active ingredient. Imipramine is an antidepressant that regulates the chemical messenger called Serotonin and norepinephrine. These chemical messengers are responsible for balancing mood and behaviour. The patient should take Depsol tablet dosage as per the doctor’s prescription. The patient should not take the medicine without consulting a doctor as there are many side effects associated with this medicine. Sudden discontinuation of Depsol tablets may cause clinical worsening of your condition or result in withdrawal symptoms.

Uses

  • As per CDSCO and USFDA, Depsol tablet is used for the following conditions:
  • Treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Treatment of nocturnal enuresis

Contraindications

  • Depsol tablets are contraindicated in the following cases:
  • If you are allergic to a component of the Depsol tablet, i.e. Imipramine
  • If you are already taking antidepressants, anti-anxiety or sedative medications
  • If you are taking narcotic or opioid pain relievers
  • If you have acute angle glaucoma, which increases the fluid pressure in the eyes
  • If you notice suicidal thoughts or ideation
  • If you have respiratory depression
  • If you have a history of seizure disorder and are currently under treatment for it
  • If you have a history of brain damage or a head injury
  • If you have liver and kidney disease
  • If you are pregnant
  • If you are a breastfeeding mother

Pregnancy

Depsol tablet is unsafe during pregnancy. Pregnant women should take Depsol tablet only if necessary or in some life-threatening condition. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before taking this medicine and inform their doctor about their pregnancy or intention to conceive at the time of prescription.

Breast Feeding

Do not take Depsol tablet during breastfeeding. Some clinical data indicates that this medicine may pass into breastmilk and should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Even a tinyl amount of this medicine in breast milk is sufficient to cause withdrawal symptoms in breastfed infants.

Driving

Depsol tablet may cause side effects that could affect your ability to drive. The tablet may cause decreased alertness, sedation, blurred vision, mental confusion, nausea and can cause dizziness, lethargy, lightheadedness. Avoid driving if you are experiencing these side effects after taking the Depsol tablet.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption with Depsol tablet is not advised. It increases the severity of side effects like decreased vision, dizziness, drowsiness, sedation, liver injury, etc. It can also worsen the condition of your disease.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have any allergic reactions after taking the Depsol tablet.
  • You notice any sudden self-harming thoughts or suicidal ideation.
  • You have trouble breathing or talking.
  • You experience any severe side effects persistently.
  • You have mild or severe liver and kidney disease; this medicine may need a dose adjustment.
  • You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy during treatment.
  • You are using oral contraceptives.
  • You are using any ayurvedic medicines, vitamins, and other health supplements.

Directions for Use

  • Take a Depsol tablet as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take the medicine with or without food or as prescribed.
  • Take Depsol tablet on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day.
  • Consume the whole tablet orally with a glass of water. Do not chew or break this tablet.
  • Do not take Depsol tablet with other medications without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not stop taking Depsol tablet abruptly, as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms.
  • Do not exceed the dosage of Depsol tablet on your own, even if you cannot feel its effects.

Storage and disposal

Store Depsol tablet at room temperature in a cool and dry area, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medication away from the reach of children and pets. Do not remove the medicine from its original packing. Do not flush Depsol tablet down into the toilet or throw away the medicines via household waste. Dispose of the expired medicine immediately. Do not consume this medication after the expiry date stated on the label.

Overdose

Depsol tablet overdose symptoms may include fainting, somnolence, impairment of motor functions, including dizziness, poor coordination, muscle weakness, loss of balance, low blood pressure (hypotension), shallow breathing (hypoventilation), coma, death. If you experience these overdose symptoms, seek emergency medical treatment from the nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of Depsol tablet, take it as soon as possible. If the duration missed is too long, and it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the regular schedule. Do not take both doses together as it may lead to overdose side effects. Consult your doctor for more information.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Depsol tablet contains Imipramine-75mg as an active ingredient. Imipramine belongs to the tricyclic antidepressant class of medicine. It works by inhibiting the reuptake (reabsorption) of chemical messengers like Norepinephrine and Serotonin in the brain. By preventing their reuptake, it balances the level of chemical messengers and the effects of these messengers last longer in the brain, thus, regulating mood swings and managing depression.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of Depsol tablet with other CNS depressants and opioids is strictly contraindicated, as it may cause respiratory depression, coma and death.
  • Depsol tablets should not be used concomitantly or within two weeks of using Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, Selegiline, Rasagiline, etc. It is potentially life-threatening.
  • Depsol tablet interaction with an antidepressant, antihistamines (allergy medicines), pain killers, such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, codeine, sleeping pills, etc., can increase drowsiness and fatigue.
  • Depsol tablets can interact with birth control pills, or oral contraceptives can reduce effectiveness. So it is advised to use other methods of contraception like condoms.
  • Depsol tablet interaction with Herbal products like St John’s wort can lead to life-threatening side effects.

Interactions with food items

  • Avoid consuming Tyramine-rich foods such as cheese, milk, meat, chocolate, chicken liver, grapefruit juice, etc., while taking Depsol tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Depsol tablets usually take between 4 to 6 weeks before you see improvement in your symptoms. Once you feel better, you are advised to continually take this medicine for several more months to prevent the symptoms from returning and properly follow the doctor's advice.

Do not stop taking Depsol tablet despite having symptomatic relief. Abruptly stopping this medication can cause withdrawal symptoms which can be severe and debilitating. Consult your doctor before stopping the medication as doses need to be slowly tapered to avoid side effects.

Some data shows that consumption of Depsol tablets may lead to weight gain if it is used for a longer duration. However, it varies from person to person and disease condition. If you notice any weights changes, be more active, exercise regularly and eat healthily.
