Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Human pregnancy information is limited, so this injection should be used only when the expected benefit justifies possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is not known whether darbepoetin alfa passes into human milk, so your doctor will advise whether treatment is suitable.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if anaemia, dizziness, headache, or treatment makes you feel less alert.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Ask your doctor about alcohol because it may worsen dizziness or blood-pressure changes.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It may be given under the skin or into a vein as selected by the treating team.

Storage and disposal

Store the pre-filled syringe in a refrigerator as directed on the label, protect it from light, do not freeze it, and do not shake it. Keep it out of reach of children; the clinic should dispose of used syringes safely.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every blood-test and blood-pressure appointment.
  • Tell the treating team about chest pain, weakness, or breathlessness.
  • Do not change the injection schedule yourself.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much can raise the red blood cell count and may cause very high blood pressure, headache, seizures, or blood clots. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

This injection is given by a healthcare professional. If an appointment is missed, contact the treating clinic for advice; the team will decide whether to skip the missed dose. Do not receive an extra injection to make up for a missed appointment. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Darbepoetin alfa acts like the body's erythropoietin and signals the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. This can reduce the need for transfusion in selected patients.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect blood pressure or the risk of clotting while this medicine raises red blood cell production. Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use. In particular, tell them if you take blood-pressure medicines, blood thinners, or other medicines that stimulate red blood cell production.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Follow your doctor's advice about iron and other supplements.
