Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

The active ingredient of Conos 25 mg Tablet is noscapine. Noscapine works on the brain by action on particular receptors called sigma receptors. Studies in animal subjects have shown that by activating this receptor, it produces cough-suppressing (antitussive) effects. Noscapine is a naturally occurring compound in poppy plants and is similar to opium and other opioid compounds. However, it lacks the significant effects of other opioid compounds that cause habit-forming behaviour (hypnotic, pain-relieving, euphoria-inducing effects).

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • The use of Conos 25 mg Tablet along with alcohol and other CNS depressants is contraindicated.
  • The concurrent use of noscapine with a group of medications called MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) is contraindicated.
  • It should not be used alongside medications that prevent clotting of blood like warfarin, as it can increase this effect. This can result in bleeding problems.

Interactions with food items

  • Conos 25 mg Tablet is recommended to be taken before food on an empty stomach. Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid consuming grapefruit or its juice while taking this medicine, as it may cause unwanted effects by decreasing the metabolisation of noscapine.
