Medical Description
Clonex 0.5 mg tablet belongs to the sedatives and hypnotics class of drugs. It contains clonazepam as its active ingredient. It is used to treat anxiety and convulsions (fits). However, it is also used to treat side effects of medicines like akathisia (feeling of restlessness) and catatonic reactions (abnormal and uncontrollable movements of limbs).
Clonex 0.5 mg tablets should be taken at a dose and for a duration as prescribed by your doctor. It can cause addiction; hence the prescription should be strictly followed. Try to take medicine at a fixed time each day. If you have missed a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember it. However, don't take two doses at a time to compensate for the missed dose.
Some of this medicine's most common side effects are fatigue, decreased sexual desire, dizziness, confusion, and impaired coordination. Most of the side effects are mild and should not disrupt your day-to-day life. If you experience difficulty breathing, hoarseness in voice, rash, and swelling of eyes, face, and lips, you should immediately inform your doctor.
Clonex 0.5 mg tablets should not be combined with food items like grapefruit juice or caffeine. You should inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking to prevent adverse interactions between the medicines. You should also inform your doctor about any pre-existing liver or kidney diseases. You may experience worsening pain in the eyes if you have acute narrow-angle glaucoma (condition affect vision due to damage of optic nerve of eyes)
You should continuously monitor your symptoms after taking this medicine. If you notice any drastic change in mood or behavior or experience suicidal thoughts or thoughts related to self-harm, you should immediately inform your doctor. These symptoms signify worsening of your condition or inadequate control of your symptoms. You may need dose modification depending on your response and side effects.

Contraindications
- Clonex 0.5 mg tablets are not prescribed to those who have had allergic reactions to the medicine in the past
- This medicine is not prescribed in people with a history of addiction. This is because Clonex has addictive potential
- People with pre-existing liver diseases should take Clonex 0.5 mg with caution as the medicine is primarily metabolized in the liver
- People with pre-existing kidney diseases may require dose modifications for Clonex
- Clonex 0.5 mg should not be prescribed to those who had glaucoma (condition affect vision due to damage of optic nerve of eyes) as the medicine can cause an increase in pressure in the eyes
- The elderly should be prescribed Clonex with caution as chances of side effects like drowsiness, fatigue, and palpitations

- If you have any respiratory disease then you should inform your doctor as Clonex can decrease respiratory rate
- You should monitor your symptoms regularly and immediately consult a doctor if you notice any drastic change in mood or behavior
- You should take this medicine at the recommended dose. You should not take it for a longer duration or higher than the prescribed dose as it has addictive potential
- You should not stop taking this medicine abruptly as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like agitation, restlessness, anxiety, and depression. You should immediately consult a doctor if you face any of these symptoms

Overdose
Taking more than the recommended dose of Clonex 0.5 mg tablet can cause symptoms like drowsiness, difficulty in swallowing, breathing problems, confusion, and coma (state of unconsciousness for long duration). You should immediately rush to a nearby emergency room or consult a doctor.
Missed a Dose
If you miss a dose of Clonex 0.5 mg tablet, you should take it as soon as possible. However, if it's time for the next dose to be taken, then you may skip the dose and continue with your normal schedule. You should not take two doses at a time to compensate for the missed dose.

How Does It Work?
Clonex 0.5 mg tablet contains clonazepam as its active component. Clonazepam belongs to the sedatives and hypnotics class of medicine. It increases the concentration of an important neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA). Increasing the concentration of GABA decreases the incidence of convulsions and panic attacks. It calms the mind and decreases anxiety, and prevents panic attacks.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Antibiotics (clarithromycin, dalfopristin/quinupristin, erythromycin, or telithromycin) as the efficacy of antibiotics decreases when it is combined with Clonex
- Antifungal medicine (fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, or voriconazole ) as antifungals decreases the metabolism of Clonex
- Antidepressants (amitriptyline, doxepin, nefazodone, nortriptyline) as the combination can increase the chances of drowsiness and sedation
- Barbiturate (butabarbital, secobarbital, pentobarbital, or phenobarbital) as it can increase the side effects of Clonex like fatigue and drowsiness
- Antidepressants such as furazolidone, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, tranylcypromine as the combination of Clonex and MAOIs can cause adverse reactions like convulsions, low blood pressure levels, coma, and death
- Antipsychotics ( chlorpromazine, haloperidol, pimozide) as the combination can cause sedation and impaired judgment
Interactions with food items
- Clonex 0.5 mg tablets should not be taken with coffee and chocolates as these food items stimulate the brain cells while Clonex calms the mind. Hence, the combination should be avoided
- Avoid taking grape juice and Clonex as grapefruit juice can decrease the metabolism of Clonex, leading to a high concentration of the medicine in body
