Medical Description

AKT 3 is used to prevent and treat tuberculosis. It combines three medicines that help kill tuberculosis inflicting germs in your body. Tuberculosis is an infection caused by a bacterium that affects the lungs in most cases. It may also cause disease in the brain, bones, and abdominal organs. AKT 3 prevents the growth of tuberculosis, causing bacteria and killing them. It belongs to a group of medicines called anti-tuberculosis medicines. This medicine is a fixed-dose combination of three active ingredients: Isoniazid, Rifampicin, and Ethambutol.

Pregnancy

Yes. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of taking AKT 3 during pregnancy. It has been found that pregnant women and the unborn child are more at risk of developing complications related to tuberculosis if the mother is left untreated for tuberculosis during pregnancy. You should inform your healthcare provider if you have become pregnant during the course of treatment with AKT 3. Your doctor may advise you on a specific diet frequent checkups to ensure good health for you and the baby. You should talk to your doctor if you are planning for pregnancy while on AKT 3. You may be advised to first complete the course of the treatment.

Breast Feeding

Yes. You should continue to breastfeed the baby. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of breastfeeding the baby while taking AKT 3. The treatment should not be stopped during breastfeeding without completing the course. Your doctor shall recommend some tests at the end of the course before stopping the treatment. The medicines in AKT 3 have been found to pass through the breast milk in very low levels and have not been found to cause adverse effects to the child. Your doctor shall advise regular checkups for the child also.

Driving

Your ability to drive may get affected after taking this medicine. You may experience symptoms like tingling of the hands and arms, blurred vision, or nausea and vomiting. Avoid driving while taking this medicine.

No. You should not consume alcohol while on this medication. Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects related to the medicine. This could end in liver disease. Consuming alcohol while taking this medicine may have risks of jaundice, joint pains, unusual bruising, and severe abdominal pain.

  • You are allergic to ethambutol, rifampicin, or isoniazid.
  • You have liver disease or kidney disease.
  • You have taken any medicine in the past for tuberculosis.
  • You experience any side effects after taking this medicine.

Directions for Use

  • Take AKT 3 as directed by your physician.
  • Take the medicine on an empty stomach, preferably one hour before meals or two hours after. This is because food could decrease the absorption of some ingredients in it.
  • Take the capsule and the pill in the strip together. Swallow the medicine whole with water. The tablet is not to be crushed or chewed.
  • If you take antacids, keep a gap of one hour between the antacid and AKT 3.
  • Take the medicine at an identical time daily to avoid missing the dose. It also helps in following the dosage schedule properly.
  • Complete the entire course of medicine as provided by your healthcare provider. You should not stop it even if you start feeling better. Stopping the medication before completing the course may end in incomplete treatment, a decrease in the effectiveness of the medicines and infection may come back.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider if you feel any side effects of the medication.
  • You can continue with a balanced diet as advised by the doctor.

Storage and disposal

Store the medicine at room temperature in a cool, dry place far away from heat and humidity. Keep out of reach of children. If you cannot complete the treatment or need a modification of the treatment program, then safely dispose of the remaining tablets to avoid any accidental usage of the medication.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, rash, slurring of speech, dizziness, convulsions, reddish discolouration of urine, tears, sweat or saliva, tingling sensation in hands and legs, or defects in the vision. Talk to your doctor if you have accidentally consumed more tablets. Your doctor may advise you on certain tests to assess the effects of overdose on the liver.

Missed a Dose

AKT 3 should be taken according to the schedule advised by the doctor. If you have forgotten a dose, take it as soon as you recall it, provided there is sufficient time gap for the next dose. If the next dose time is close, then take the scheduled dose. Do not take two doses together as it may result in serious side effects.

How Does It Work?

AKT 3 can cure tuberculosis by preventing the growth of bacteria and killing them. Isoniazid and rifampicin are antibiotics. Rifampicin kills the TB inflicting bacterium, and isoniazid prevents the growth of those bacteria. In addition, Ethambutol prevents the development of resistance to different medications present in AKT 3.

  • It should be taken without food, keeping a gap of one to two hours between the medication and food.
  • It would be best not to take alcohol while on this treatment. Taking alcohol in conjunction with it may result in nausea, vomiting, headache, and dizziness.
