Megestrol

• For the treatment of anorexia (loss of appetite), cachexia (severe weight loss), or an unexplained, significant weight loss in patients with a diagnosis of cancer or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

When should one not use Megestrol

• Megestrol should not be used If :
• You have a known severe hypersensitivity or systemic allergic reaction to megestrol acetate or any inactive ingredients in the tablet.
• Known or suspected pregnancy

Common side effects of this drug are:

• Very Common Side Effects
• Swelling (peripheral edema)
• Nausea, diarrhea, and gas
• Hot flashes and menstrual bleeding/spotting
• Decreased sex drive
• Other Common Side Effects
• Shortness of breath and coughing
• Trouble sleeping, unusual weakness Depression, confusion and abnormal thinking
• Skin rash, hair loss, or unusual hair growth
• High blood sugar or worsening diabetes
• Slight increase in blood pressure
• Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Medical Care)
• Blood Clots: Swelling, warmth, and severe pain in the leg; sudden breathlessness or chest pain; or signs of a stroke or heart attack.
• Adrenal Gland Issues: Extreme tiredness, dizziness, low blood pressure, throwing up, or confusion (especially during sickness, stress, or if you stop taking the medicine suddenly).
• New Diabetes: Extreme thirst, needing to urinate very often, extreme hunger, or severe tiredness.
• Severe Liver Issues: Yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe pain on the upper right side of your stomach.

Other General Warnings

• Consult your doctor if you:
• Have a history of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or blood clotting disorders.
• Have pre-existing diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.
• Have active liver or kidney disease.
• Weigh yourself regularly as directed by your care team to monitor fluid retention and actual body mass gain.
• If you have diabetes, check your blood glucose levels frequently during treatment.
• Seek emergency medical care immediately if you notice sudden swelling, warmth, or pain in your leg, or sudden shortness of breath.
• Do not stop taking this medication suddenly without discussing it with your doctor.
• Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
• Dispose of unused or expired tablets in accordance with safe medicine disposal standards.

How Does It Work?

Interactions with other medicines

• Oral Antidiabetic drugs & Insulin: Megestrol can elevate blood glucose levels; your doctor may adjust your diabetic drug dosage.
• Warfarin / Oral Anticoagulants: Concurrent use may alter clotting time; your doctor might monitor your blood coagulation time closely if required.
• Inform your physician about all concurrent prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products.
