Medical Description

Zavedos is used in specialist treatment of certain blood disorders involving abnormal cells. Its active ingredient is idarubicin.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, contact your specialist promptly and take it as soon as you remember unless your specialist tells you otherwise. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

An overdose can cause severe low blood counts, infection, bleeding or heart problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Idarubicin interferes with DNA in rapidly dividing cells, helping stop abnormal cells from multiplying.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way idarubicin works or increase its effects on the heart and blood counts. Tell your specialist about all medicines, supplements and herbal products you use. In particular, tell them if you are taking another cancer treatment, a medicine for infection or a medicine that can affect the heart.

Interactions with food items

Zavedos capsule may be taken with a light meal. No other specific food interactions are documented in the prescribing information.

Other general Interactions

  • You have a history of heart disease, previous anthracycline treatment or previous chest radiotherapy.
  • You have liver or kidney problems.
  • You have an active infection.
  • You experience fever, chills or other signs of infection during treatment.
  • You notice unusual bruising, bleeding or blood in your stool or urine, other than the expected red-tinged urine in the first day or two.
  • You develop breathlessness, leg swelling, sudden weight gain, or an irregular heartbeat.
  • You develop severe or persistent mouth sores, abdominal pain or diarrhoea.
  • You are due to receive any vaccination, particularly a live vaccine.
  • You are planning to have children, as idarubicin can affect fertility in both men and women.
