Medical Description
Septran DS tablet is an antibiotic medicine used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the growth of the infection-causing organism. Septran DS is a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.
It should not be used for children under 12 years of age, pregnant women and lactating mothers. This tablet should be taken as directed by the doctor and in doses and duration as prescribed. You should take Septran DS with food.
Always complete the entire course of treatment with antibiotics, as incomplete treatment may result in treatment failure and an increased risk of re-infection.
Bactrim DS tablet also contains a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.
Side effects include a headache, nausea, diarrhoea, skin rashes, an increase in potassium levels and the development of fungal infections. In case you experience any of the side effects or you feel any discomfort after using this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.
Before using the Septran DS tablet, inform the doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about your detailed medical history. It is advised to complete the course of antibiotics and not skip any dose even if you feel better.

Contraindications of SEPTRAN DS 800/160MG STRIP OF 10 TABLETS
- If you are allergic to trimethoprim or sulfamethoxazole or any other ingredient of Septran DS tablet.
- If you have severe liver damage or jaundice.
- If you have severe kidney damage.
- If you are suffering from a condition of reduced platelets caused by antibodies produced as a response to trimethoprim and/or sulphonamides (drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia).
- If you are giving it to infants in the first 6 weeks of birth.
- If you are pregnant woman, especially in the third trimester.

- You have a kidney-related disorder or you have asthma.
- You are an elderly patient and the risk of getting side effects is more prominent in the elderly.
- You have glucose-6-phosphatase dehydrogenase deficiency which is characterised by pale skin, jaundice and tiredness.
- You have an imbalance in body fluids or a blood disorder such as porphyria characterised by severe abdominal pain.
- Close monitoring of electrolyte levels is recommended if you have a risk of increased potassium and decreased sodium levels which could be due to certain medicines, age or due to some health condition....
- Prolonged use of this medicine can lead to variations in blood count, regular blood count monitoring is recommended usually.

- Septran DS tablet should be taken as directed by your doctor.
- Swallow it as a whole with a glass of water, do not cut, break or chew the medicine.
- It should be taken with food or after food.

Interactions with other medicines
- Concomitant use of Septran DS tablets and medication used to reduce blood pressure like enalapril, quinapril etc. can result in which an increased risk of heart disorders.
- Anaesthetics like Prilocaine when used with this medicine can increase the risk of methaemoglobinaemia characterized by bluish skin.
- Medicines like Amiodarone used to treat irregular heartbeats when used with this medication can further increase the risk of heartbeat irregularity.
- Medicines like Procainamide used for irregular heartbeats, and Amantadine used for Parkinson's disease when taken with this medicine can interfere with the action of Septran DS.
- This medicine can increase the blood-thinning effect of medicines like warfarin and may increase the risk of bleeding.
- This medicine can enhance the effect of some antidiabetic medications such as Glimepiride and Glipizide can decrease your blood sugar levels abruptly.
- Using Anti-malarial medicine pyrimethamine may increase the risk of anaemia if taken along with Septran DS.
- Using antiviral medicines like Zidovudine with this medicine can increase the risk of blood-related disorders
