Medical Description

Saphrine cream is a combination medicine used to treat burns, wounds, and wound infections. It contains four active ingredients: chlorhexidine (antiseptic), metronidazole (antimicrobial), silver sulfadiazine (antibiotic), and zinc (promotes healing).

Uses

  • Burn wound treatment
  • Wound infection prevention
  • Infected wound management
  • Wound healing support

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine (especially silver sulfadiazine or sulfonamides), do not use it. Do not use on very deep wounds or puncture wounds without medical supervision. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease without medical guidance. Do not use on pregnant women who are near their due date, on premature babies, or on newborns in their first two months of life, because of a risk of jaundice in the baby.

  • Irritation
  • Allergic reaction
  • Discoloration

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Avoid this medicine late in pregnancy (close to delivery), as the sulfonamide component (silver sulfadiazine) can increase the risk of jaundice in the newborn. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant so they can weigh up safer options.

Directions for Use

For external use only, apply on healthy skin free from cuts and wounds. Gently clean the wound with sterile saline solution or as directed by your doctor. Apply a thin layer of Saphrine cream directly to the wound or affected area. Cover with a sterile dressing if needed. Reapply as directed by your healthcare provider. Wash your hands before and after application.

Overdose

Systemic overdose is unlikely with topical use. However, if the cream is accidentally ingested or applied excessively over a very large area, seek medical attention. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

Since this cream is applied as needed rather than on a regular schedule, a missed dose does not apply. Apply the next dose when due. Do not apply extra cream to compensate.

How does this medicine work?

Chlorhexidine and silver sulfadiazine are antimicrobial agents that kill bacteria and prevent infection. Metronidazole targets anaerobic bacteria and reduces inflammation. Zinc supports tissue repair and accelerates wound healing by promoting cell growth.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

No significant interactions with other medicines are known when this cream is used externally as directed.
