  • Heart failure following a recent heart attack
  • High blood pressure during surgery
  • Deliberately lowering blood pressure during certain operations

  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension
  • Flushing
  • Drowsiness

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Avoid use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Consult your physician regarding risks and benefits.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Nitrocin injection contains ethanol which may pass into breast milk. Discuss with your doctor if breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive or operate machinery during or immediately after treatment due to dizziness and hypotension.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid consuming alcohol during treatment as it significantly increases hypotensive effects and may cause circulatory collapse.

Directions for Use

Nitrocin injection is administered intravenously by a qualified healthcare professional in a hospital or clinical setting. Typical dosing begins at 5 micrograms per minute and is titrated upward based on blood pressure and clinical response. The patient will be monitored continuously during and for at least 30 minutes after administration.

Storage and disposal

Store Nitrocin injection according to pharmaceutical guidelines, typically at 15 to 25 degrees Celsius away from light. Do not freeze. Dispose of unused product according to hospital waste management protocols.

Quick Tips

  • Inform your doctor of all medications, especially erectile dysfunction medicines
  • Report any history of anemia or liver disease
  • Expect possible headache and flushing during treatment
  • Monitor blood pressure closely throughout administration
  • Remain supine during and after administration to minimize orthostatic hypotension

Dosage

Overdose

Overdose may cause severe hypotension, reflex tachycardia, severe headache, methemoglobinemia, or cardiovascular collapse. Emergency medical treatment including intravenous fluids, vasopressors, and potentially methylene blue for methemoglobinemia may be required.

Missed a Dose

Nitrocin injection is administered in a hospital setting by a healthcare professional, so missed doses are managed by the medical team as part of the treatment protocol.

How does this medicine work?

Nitroglycerin is broken down in the body to release nitric oxide, a natural chemical that relaxes and widens blood vessels. This improves blood flow through the heart's own blood vessels and the rest of the body, easing the heart's workload and relieving chest pain.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Severe interaction with phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors causing dangerous hypotension. Caution with other antihypertensive agents, tricyclic antidepressants, and ergot alkaloids. Alcohol may potentiate hypotensive effects.

Interactions with food items

No direct food interactions; however, the patient should be fasting prior to hospital administration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Intravenous nitroglycerin requires continuous monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and potential adverse effects, which is safely managed only in a controlled medical setting.
Inform your doctor about all medications you take, particularly erectile dysfunction medicines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and any history of anemia or heart conditions.
