Medical Description

Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet is a blood pressure reducing medicine. It is used to treat high blood pressure when it cannot be managed using a single medicine. It contains a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and losartan as active substances. This medicine acts by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing urination, which works together to lower the raised blood pressure. Pregnant women should not take this medicine. Do not stop taking this medicine abruptly. Always take it in the dose and duration as prescribed by your doctor. Before using Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet, inform the doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about your detailed medical history.

Uses

Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet is used to treat high blood pressure when hydrochlorothiazide and losartan alone are unable to control blood pressure.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or any other ingredients of Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet.
  • If you are allergic to sulfonamide medicines such as co-trimoxazole. If you are not sure what these medicines are, please confirm with your doctor.
  • If you have diabetes or kidney problems and taking medicines for treating high blood pressure like aliskiren.
  • If you have a low level of potassium and sodium or high levels of calcium in your blood.
  • If you have liver disorders and problems related to the bile duct (a canal connecting the liver to the intestine) like cholestasis.
  • If you have kidney diseases due to which you are not producing enough urine.
  • If you have gout.
  • If you are pregnant for more than 3 months.

  • You have a history of swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue due to water retention.
  • You experience fainting and giddiness especially after the first dose, a sign of low blood pressure.
  • You are planning a pregnancy.
  • You have liver, kidney, or any heart-related problem or disease.
  • You have been experiencing fluid losses within your body due to diarrhoea, vomiting, etc.
  • You are suffering from primary aldosteronism (a condition of excess production of the hormone aldosterone from the adrenal glands).
  • You have diabetes, an electrolyte imbalance of sodium, magnesium, and potassium, or have symptoms of dryness of mouth, thirst, drowsiness, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting.
  • You have gout, bronchial asthma, or any autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus.

Missed a Dose

It would be best if you never miss a dose of your blood pressure medicine as it may lead to serious high blood pressure-related problems. If you have missed taking any dose of Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose of this medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How Does It Work?

  • Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet contains a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and losartan as active ingredients
  • Losartan lowers blood pressure by blocking the action of a substance called angiotensin responsible for narrowing the blood vessels and increasing blood pressure.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide acts by increasing the production of urine and the loss of water and salt from the body, thereby lowering the blood pressure. Both the medicines act by different mechanisms resulting in effective control of blood pressure.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interactions.
  • Especially, if you are taking medicines to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, high/abnormal cholesterol levels, blood clots, diabetes infections, asthma, pain, immunomodulatory medicines, or medicines for brain-related disorders.
  • Your blood potassium levels may go down if you are taking steroids and antifungals like amphotericin.
  • Your blood potassium levels may increase if you are taking potassium supplements (amiloride, spironolactone) and trimethoprim.
  • You may experience low blood sugar if you are taking medicine for treating diabetes like insulin and metformin along with this medicine.
  • You may experience abnormal heart rhythms if you are taking medicine for heart failure like digoxin.

Blood pressure will not start to lower after you start taking the Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet. It will take 3-4 weeks for your blood pressure to be normalized. This medicine is not recommended to be used in patients who have not received prior therapy for high blood pressure and should preferably be used in patients who had exposure to both the medicines as single tablets previously.

Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet can be used at a normal dose in patients with mild to moderate kidney failure (i.e., creatinine clearance is above 30-50 ml/min). However, it should not be used in severe kidney failure or patients on hemodialysis. Similarly, this medicine can be used but with caution in patients with mild-moderate liver disease. It should not be used in patients with severe liver impairment.

Your blood pressure, kidney function and blood potassium levels need to be regularly monitored while you are taking this medicine.Caution is advised (inform your doctor) if you are undergoing any radiography with iodine contrast media.Losar-H 50/12.5 tablet should not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
