Medical Description

Galop Tablet is a prescription medication primarily used in the treatment of major depressive disorder and other mental health conditions like anxiety, panic disorder(sudden attacks of extreme fear and worry), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD-uncontrollable, repetitive thoughts that compels to do repetitive behaviors). Major depressive disorder or depression is characterized by sadness, mood swings, loss of interest, hopelessness, loneliness, etc. Galop Tablet contains escitalopram as its active ingredient. It belongs to an antidepressant class of medicine. It works by increasing serotonin in the brain, which is responsible for elevating the mood, improving energy, and reducing nervousness. Galop Tablet should be taken in dosage and duration as advised by your doctor. There are also many side effects associated with this medicine, so it is advised to take it after the doctor’s consultation, and dosage must be carefully monitored. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, as it can cause clinical worsening of your condition or may lead to withdrawal symptoms.

  • As per CDSCO, Galop Tablet is used for:
  • Treatment of Major depressive disorder (feeling of sadness, mood swings, loss of interest, hopelessness, and loneliness.)
  • Treatment of Generalised Anxiety Disorder
  • Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Treatment of Panic disorder

Contraindications

  • You are allergic to any of the components of the Galop Tablet
  • You have acute angle glaucoma, which increases the fluid pressure in the eyes
  • You have liver or kidney disease
  • You have respiratory issues
  • You have a heart condition

Side effects

Galop Tablet is not recommended during pregnancy. Some research studies have shown harmful effects of the medicines on the developing foetus(baby). Driving

Alcohol

Directions for Use

  • Take the Galop Tablet as prescribed by the doctor
  • You can take this medicine with or without food or as prescribed
  • Take this medicine on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day
  • Take the whole tablet with a glass of water. Do not break/crush the tablet or chew this medicine
  • Do not take this tablet with other medications without consulting your doctor
  • Don’t stop taking this medication suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects
  • Do not consume if the package has been opened
  • Don’t exceed the dosage, even if you cannot feel its effects

Storage and disposal

Store Galop Tablet away from sunlight in a cool and dry spot. Ensure the medication is out of reach from children and pet animals. Keep your tablets in their original packing until it is time to take them. Do not flush Galop Tablet down into the toilet. Do not throw away the medicines via household waste. Dispose of the expired medicine immediately. Do not use it after the expiry date stated on the label.

Overdose

Galop Tablet overdose can result in irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, slowing heart rate, sleepiness, double vision, difficulty breathing, cardiac arrest, ECG changes (change in heart functioning), and coma. If you are overdose on this medicine and experience any of these symptoms, immediately seek emergency medical treatment from a nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a dose of the Galop Tablet, take it as you remember. If it is already time to take the next scheduled dose, then take the next scheduled dose. Do not double doses as it can cause overdose side effects. Talk to your doctor if you have any confusion regarding this issue.

How Does It Work?

Galop Tablet contains escitalopram-5 mg as an active ingredient. Escitalopram is an antidepressant medication. It works by preventing the re-uptake of serotonin by the nerve cells, which results in an increased level of a chemical messenger called serotonin in the brain. Increased level of serotonin directly leads to improved mood and relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines (prescription and non-prescription medications, herbal products, vitamins, and nutritional supplements) that you are taking or plan to take as there is a chance of drug interaction. Many medicines can interact with Galop Tablet, making it less effective or increasing side effects.
  • This includes-
  • Antidepressants like Selegiline, Rasagiline, Isocarboxazid, and other antidepressants such as lithium, triptans, buspirone, amphetamines, tramadol, tryptophan, is strictly contraindicated as they may cause serotonin syndrome characterized by sleeplessness, confusion, increased heart rate, and high blood pressure
  • Interaction with metoprolol can lead to excessive bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Interaction with tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics (pimozide, haloperidol), and antihistamines can prolong QT(abnormal heart rhythm condition) interval.
  • NSAIDs, Aspirin, and other medications that affect coagulation may interact and increase the risk of bleeding
  • Azole antifungals clarithromycin (e.g., fluconazole, fluvoxamine, omeprazole) interaction may cause increased serum levels

Interactions with food items

  • You should avoid consuming this medicine with cola drinks, caffeine-containing food items, and chocolates as it can result in serotonin syndrome (high levels of serotonin)

Yes, suddenly stopping the consumption of Galop Tablet causes withdrawal symptoms, including agitation, nausea, tremor, confusion, diarrhea, vomiting, and sweating. Consult your doctor before stopping the consumption of the Galop Tablet, as doses need to be tapered slowly to avoid undesirable side effects.

Galop Tablet is to be taken until your doctor sees an improvement in your health conditions. However, It usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks before you see improvement in your symptoms. Once you are feeling better, you will be advised to continually take this medicine for several more months to prevent the symptoms from returning.

Galop Tablet can cause decreased sexual drive, problems such as getting an erection and ejaculating, difficulty achieving orgasm in women. These side effects usually pass on their own after a couple of weeks. However, if you persistently experience these side effects, consult your doctor.
