Medical Description
Caludec tablet is a prescription medicine available in tablet form, used to treat advanced prostate cancer, usually in combination with an LHRH analogue or after surgical removal of the testicles.
Caludec tablet contains bicalutamide, which belongs to a group of medicines called anti-androgens. It works by blocking the action of male hormones on prostate cancer cells, mainly testosterone. This helps slow down or stop the growth of prostate cancer cells. When used with an LHRH analogue, the two medicines work in conjunction with each other to reduce the effect of male hormones and reduce the progression of cancer. The LHRH analogue lowers testosterone production, while bicalutamide blocks the action of testosterone that remains in the body. Caludec tablet is taken by mouth, with or without food, and should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Caludec tablet is only meant to be taken by men and is contraindicated in women and children.
Common side effects of Caludec tablet may include hot flashes, pain in the back, pelvis or stomach, weakness, constipation, infections, nausea, swelling of the ankles, legs or feet, diarrhoea, blood in the urine, needing to urinate at night, low red blood cell count (anaemia), dizziness, reduced ability to control blood sugar levels, breast enlargement and breast pain. Caludec tablet may also affect the liver, so your doctor may recommend regular liver function tests during treatment. Inform your doctor if you are on blood thinners, are diabetic, or have a history of liver disease.
