Medical Description
Amipride is a prescription medicine used to treat schizophrenia. This mental condition can make a person feel, see, or hear things that are not there, have unusual and frightening ideas, alter their behaviour, and make them feel alone. People who experience these symptoms may feel tense, nervous, or depressed. Amisulpride works by calming down agitated thoughts, feelings and actions. It works by blocking certain dopamine receptors in the brain responsible for positive (thought disorder, disorganised speech and behaviour) and negative symptoms (emotionless, low motivation, the low feeling of happiness) of schizophrenia and relieves the patient of its symptoms and brings about mental balance. The patient should not stop having this tablet suddenly even if they feel better because their initial symptoms are likely to return.
If the patient takes an excess dose of this tablet, they may experience side effects such as drowsiness and slurred speech. Patients should avoid consuming alcohol during their treatment. The patient should also restrain themselves from driving or operating heavy machinery. Severe liver impairment may be seen in some who take this medication. The doctor should be immediately consulted if the patient has yellowing of the skin, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The patient may experience certain non-harming side effects such as dizziness, dry mouth, blurring of vision, irritability, increased appetite and nausea. This tablet should not be taken if the patient has pheochromocytoma, tumour of the pituitary gland (prolactinoma), breast cancer and liver disease. Children should not take this tablet up to puberty. This tablet should also not be taken if the patient develops an allergic reaction such as rash over the skin, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and lips. This tablet should not be taken if the patient is breastfeeding.

- According to CDSCO, this medicine is used for treating positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
Contraindications
- Amipride tablet should not be taken if:
- You are allergic to Amisulpride
- You have liver impairment
- You have low potassium or magnesium in your blood
- You have breast cancer
- You recently had a heart attack
- You have arrhythmia
- You have low blood pressure
- You are lactose intolerant
- You have severe renal failure
- You have prolactinoma
- You have a tumour called pheochromocytoma
- You have low white blood cells

Directions for Use
- Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Swallow Amipride with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
- Take Amipride tablets before meals at the same time each day.
- Take the dose as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not share your prescription with anyone else.
- Do not stop having this tablet suddenly, even if you feel cured, because your initial symptoms will likely return.
- Refrain from drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes while on this medicine.
- Rise slowly from your bed, resting your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing, as this tablet can cause low blood pressure, and when you rise from a lying position, you may experience lightheadedness and fainting.
Storage and disposal
To keep this medication out of the reach of children, keep it tightly wrapped in the container. Store at room temperature, out of direct sunlight and away from heat and moisture. Disposed of unused medicines properly to prevent pets, children, and others from eating unused medicines. Do not flush this medicine down the toilet.
Dosage
Overdose
Patients who have taken an excess dose of Amipride tablet may experience drowsiness, sedation, palpitations and lightheadedness. Keep your family or caregiver up to date on your medications and any potential side effects. If the patient is unconscious, collapses, has difficulty breathing, seizures, or cannot be woken, they should be immediately taken to the emergency department of a hospital.
Missed a Dose
Amipride should only be taken as directed by a physician. Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose. Never increase your doses unless your doctor tells you to.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Amipride tablets may interact with anti-Parkinson's medicine like Levodopa and Cabergoline. The clinical effects of these medicines can get neutralised by Amisulpride. Class of medicines that decrease blood pressure like Thiazides, Diuretics can decrease potassium to a greater extent when co-administered with Amipride. Medicines like Amphotericin, Beclomethasone and Budesonide can alter your potassium levels in the blood when co-administered with Amipride tablets. Other medicines that increase dopamine in the blood, like Ropinirole and Bromocriptine, should not be co-administered with Amipride tablets. Therefore, you must inform your consulting physician about any medications you are on.
Interactions with food items
- Unless your physician suggests, there is no need to avoid any particular type of food or drink. You should
- take your medicine before every meal.
