Medical Description

Alprax Forte is a prescription medication primarily used to treat panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterised by episodes of sudden or unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry. Alprax Forte is a combination medicine that contains Sertraline and Alprazolam as the active ingredient. Sertraline is an antidepressant that regulates the chemical messenger called Serotonin, whereas Alprazolam produces calming, sedative effects on the brain. Dosage and duration of Alprax Forte should be taken as advised by your doctor. There are many side effects associated with this medicine; that's why it must be taken after a doctor’s consultation. Don’t stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, as it can cause clinical worsening of your condition or may lead to withdrawal symptoms.

  • If you’re allergic to any component of the Alprax Forte.
  • If you are already taking antidepressants, anti-anxiety or sedative medications.
  • If you are taking narcotic or opioid pain relievers.
  • If you have acute angle glaucoma. (an eye condition that increases the fluid pressure in the eyes)
  • If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts or ideation.
  • If you have respiratory depression, which is a slow and steady decline in breathing.
  • If you have a history of substance abuse.
  • If you have liver and kidney disease.

Pregnant women are advised to consult a doctor before taking this medicine and Inform their doctor about their pregnancy or intention to conceive at the time of prescription.

Breast Feeding

Alprax Forte is not recommended during breastfeeding. It gets excreted into breast milk and can harm the baby. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding for a while or prescribe low doses if you continue breastfeeding.

Directions for Use

  • Follow the doctor’s advice regarding the dose and duration of Alprax Forte.
  • You can take this medicine with/without food or as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take this medicine on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day, to maintain its continuous level in the body.
  • Swallow Alprax Forte tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not break/crush the tablet or chew this medicine.
  • Do not take this tablet with other medications without consulting your doctor.
  • Don’t stop taking this medication suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects.
  • Don’t exceed the dosage, even if you can’t feel its effects.

Storage and disposal

Store Alprax Forteat room temperature in a dry and cool place. It should be kept away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not refrigerate. Keep Alprax Forte away from the reach of pets and children. Do not use the expired medicine and dispose of it as biomedical waste.

Overdose

Alprax Forte overdose symptoms may include fainting, somnolence, dizziness, poor coordination, muscle weakness, loss of balance, low blood pressure, shallow breathing, coma, death. If you experience these overdose symptoms, seek emergency medical treatment from the nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you’ve missed a dose of the Alprax Forte, take it as soon as possible. If you remember missing a dose when it's already time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose. Do not take both doses together to compensate for a missed dose. If you keep missing the doses regularly, then please consult with your doctor.

How Does It Work?

Alprax Forte is a combination medicine that contains Sertraline and Alprazolam as the active ingredient. Sertraline is an antidepressant that works by increasing the release of serotonin and balancing its levels in the brain. Serotonin is a natural chemical messenger responsible for improving mood, behaviour, memory and cognitive abilities. Alprazolam (a benzodiazepine) increases the activity of Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural chemical messenger in the brain. It causes suppression of the excessive and abnormal electrical activity of the nerve cells in the brain, produces a feeling of relaxation, calmness and induces sleep.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about the medications, herbal products, vitamins and supplements, you consume or plan to take as there is a chance of medicine interaction. Many medicines can interact with Alprax Forte, making it less effective or increasing the side effects. This includes:
  • Concomitant use of this medication with opioids and other CNS depressants is contraindicated, as it may cause respiratory depression, coma and death.
  • This medicine should not be used concomitantly or within two weeks of using Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, Selegiline, Rasagiline, etc. It is potentially life-threatening.
  • Interaction with an antidepressant, antihistamines (allergy medicines), Pain killers, such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, codeine, sleeping pills, etc., can increase drowsiness and fatigue.
  • Interaction with antifungal medications like itraconazole and ketoconazole can reduce the effects of it.
  • Interaction with birth control pills or oral contraceptives can reduce its effectiveness.
  • Interaction with Herbal products like St john’s wort can lead to life-threatening side effects.

Interactions with food items

  • Avoid consuming Tyramine rich foods such as cheese, milk, meat, chocolate, chicken liver etc., while taking Alprax Forte.
