Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Zedex P syrup contains a combination of paracetamol, chlorpheniramine, phenylephrine, sodium citrate, and menthol as active substances.
- Paracetamol is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that blocks the action of a chemical called cyclooxygenase. Cyclooxygenase is responsible for the formation of certain substances in the body called prostaglandins that cause fever, pain, and inflammation.
- Chlorpheniramine is an anti-allergic medicine that blocks certain proteins in the body that are responsible for causing itching, headache, redness of the skin, low blood pressure, and pain.
- Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant. It works by reducing the swelling of blood vessels of nasal passage by constricting the blood vessels and thereby relieving nasal congestion or blockage.
- Sodium citrate liquifies the mucous and helps in its expulsion thereby clearing congestion.
- Menthol helps to suppress cough sensitivity and is used to prevent or relieve a cough.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way Zedex P syrup works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Inform your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals your child is currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- Particular care should be taken if your child is taking medicines for treating blood clots (warfarin), heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (metoclopramide), ulcers (propantheline), depression (amitriptyline), pain (fentanyl), gout (probenecid), abnormal/high cholesterol (cholestyramine), and Parkinson's disease/depression (MAO inhibitors).
- The risk of toxicity may be increased when Zedex P syrup is given with other medicines that may damage the liver or with medicines used for the management of fits/seizures.
