Medical Description
Stamaril vaccine is used to protect from yellow fever. Yellow fever is a serious illness caused by a virus found in certain parts of the world. This vaccine contains a weakened, live yellow fever virus that cannot cause the illness itself. It helps your body learn how to fight the real virus if you are ever exposed to it.
Common side effects of this vaccine include injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness), muscle pain, fever, weakness, and loss of appetite. If these persist or worsen, inform your doctor for support. Before receiving the vaccine, disclose any other illnesses and all medications you are taking to ensure its safety.
Uses
- Stamaril vaccine is given to people to protect them from yellow fever if they are:
- Traveling to or living in an area where yellow fever is a risk.
- Traveling to a country that requires proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter.
- Working with materials that could be infectious (like in a laboratory).
Contraindications
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the vaccine, including eggs or chicken proteins.
- If you have had a severe allergic reaction after a previous yellow fever vaccine.
- If you are under 6 months of age.
- If you have a history of problems with your thymus gland (including myasthenia gravis or thymoma) or if you have had your thymus gland removed.
- If you have asymptomatic HIV infection with signs that your immune system is weakened.
- If you have a moderate or severe fever or are very ill.
- If you have a weakened immune system due to a condition you were born with or one you developed. This includes if you are people taking high doses of steroid medications for a long time, if you are receiving other medicines that suppress the immune system, if you are having radiation treatment, or if you are taking chemotherapy drugs.

Other General Warnings
- You have had a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine before.
- You have any bleeding disorder or are taking blood-thinning medication, as an intramuscular injection could cause bleeding or bruising. In this case, the vaccine should preferably be given under the skin.
- You have a weakened immune system (even if temporary, like if you are currently taking high-dose steroids). Vaccination might need to be delayed until your immune system recovers.
- You have HIV infection (your doctor will need to assess if the vaccine is safe for you).
- Your child was born to an HIV-positive mother (they may need testing to confirm they are not infected with HIV before getting the vaccine).
- You are 60 years of age or older, as there may be a higher risk of serious side effects. The vaccine should only be given if there is a significant risk of getting yellow fever.
- The tip cap of the pre-filled syringe contains a natural rubber latex derivative, which may cause allergic reactions if you are sensitive to latex.
Directions for Use
- The Stamaril vaccine is administered by a healthcare professional as a single injection, ideally given under the skin (via the subcutaneous route). It is important to ensure that the vaccine is not injected into a blood vessel.
- You should receive this vaccine at least 10 days prior to traveling to an area where there is a risk of yellow fever.

Interactions with other medicines
- Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those that weaken your immune system (like high-dose steroids or other immunosuppressants).
- Stamaril vaccine should not be mixed with other vaccines or medicines in the same syringe. If you need other injectable vaccines at the same time, they should be given in a different injection site (preferably a different arm or leg).
- Stamaril vaccine can be given at the same time as measles vaccine if this is officially recommended. It can also be given at the same time as vaccines for typhoid fever (Vi polysaccharide) and/or inactivated hepatitis A.
- Stamaril vaccine might cause false positive results in some tests for other related viral diseases like dengue or Japanese encephalitis.
