Uses
- Pantoprazole is used in adults and adolescents of 12 years of age or above for the treatment of symptoms like heartburn, acid regurgitation (sensation of acid in your throat or mouth), pain while swallowing that is caused due to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
- In the treatment of reflux oesophagitis (inflammation of oesophagus with regurgitation of acid in the stomach).
- In adults, it is used to prevent small intestine and stomach ulcers that are caused by long-term use of painkillers called NSAIDs like Ibuprofen.
Contraindications
- If you are allergic to pantoprazole or any ingredients of Pantin 40 mg tablet.
- If you are allergic to similar medicines such as omeprazole.
- If you are currently taking anti-HIV medications such as rilpivirine, atazanavir.

Other General Warnings
- You have severe liver problems.
- You are taking NSAIDs (painkillers).
- You have a personal or family history of stomach cancer.
- You are taking medicines used to treat HIV.
- You have low levels of vitamin B12 (like Cobalamin). This medicine is known to reduce the absorption of vitamin B12 after long-term use.
- Taking this medicine for more than one year may increase the chances of developing bone fractures.
- If you are on this medicine for more than three months, your blood magnesium levels may drop. Your doctor may perform regular tests for the same.
- If you get rash on your skin on exposure to the sun, stop your treatment with Pantoprazole and inform your doctor as this may be a symptom of Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (SCLE).
Directions for Use
- Pantin 40 mg tablet must be taken as directed by your doctor.
- The medicine is to be taken 1 hour before food, on an empty stomach.
- Do not chew or break the pill, swallow it whole with a glass of water.
Storage and disposal
- Store Pantin 40 mg tablets in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight.
- Keep it away from children and pets.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way Pantin 40 mg tablet works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- Pantin 40 mg tablet may alter the action of medicines whose bioavailability is dependent on stomach acid such as ketoconazole.
- This medicine must not be co-administered with atazanavir, an anti-HIV medicine and methotrexate, an immunomodulator.
- Frequent monitoring of blood clotting parameters is required if you are taking blood thinners such as warfarin. There is also a risk of bleeding.
- Levels of methotrexate (used to treat certain types of cancer) can be increased in the body upon concomitant use with Pantin 40 mg tablet.
Interactions with food items
- Pantin 40 mg tablet should preferably be taken on an empty stomach.
- There are no known interactions with food or beverages. However, nicotine, caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate and cola) can increase stomach acid or delay ulcer healing and hinder the treatment process.
