Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have a pre-existing heart condition, prior heart failure, or previous radiation therapy to the chest.
  • You have previously received chemotherapy drugs belonging to the anthracycline family (such as doxorubicin or epirubicin).
  • You have a history of liver disease or impaired hepatic function.
  • You develop a high fever, persistent cough, or signs of an active infection.
  • You notice severe swelling in your feet or legs, shortness of breath, or sudden weight gain.

  • You have received a cumulative lifetime mitoxantrone dose, as further treatment may increase the risk of cardiotoxicity.

Directions for Use

This infusion will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. The concentrate must be prepared and diluted by trained staff before administration.

Storage and disposal

This medicine is stored, prepared, and disposed of by the hospital or clinic according to handling requirements. Keep it away from children and do not keep leftover infusion at home.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every blood-count and heart-function check arranged by your specialist.
  • Report fever, unusual bleeding, breathlessness, chest pain, or severe weakness urgently.
  • Use reliable contraception if your specialist advises it and report a pregnancy immediately.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe low blood counts, infection, bleeding, mouth sores, or heart problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If an appointment is missed, contact the oncology or neurology clinic for advice. Do not receive an extra infusion to compensate for a missed one. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Mitoxantrone enters cells and interferes with the copying and repair of genetic material. This can destroy rapidly dividing abnormal cells and reduce harmful immune activity in some forms of multiple sclerosis.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way this infusion works or increase heart, blood-count, or infection-related risks. Tell your specialist about all medicines, vitamins, and supplements you use. In particular, mention other cancer treatments, medicines that can harm the heart, medicines that lower blood counts, immune-suppressing treatment, or live vaccines.

Interactions with food items

No important food interaction is established. Follow the hospital team's instructions.
