Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have a pre-existing heart condition, prior heart failure, or previous radiation therapy to the chest.
  • You have previously received chemotherapy drugs belonging to the anthracycline family (such as doxorubicin or epirubicin).
  • You have a history of liver disease or impaired hepatic function.
  • You develop a high fever, persistent cough, or signs of an active infection.
  • You notice severe swelling in your feet or legs, shortness of breath, or sudden weight gain.
  • You are receiving treatment for MS, as your doctor will need to monitor your LVEF before each dose and track your cumulative lifetime dose.
  • You have received a cumulative lifetime mitoxantrone dose, as further treatment may increase the risk of cardiotoxicity.

Directions for Use

This injection is diluted and given slowly into a vein by a doctor experienced in cytotoxic treatment. It must not be self-injected or given into a muscle or under the skin.

Storage and disposal

Store the injection as directed on the label, protect it from freezing, and keep it out of reach of children. A healthcare facility must handle and dispose of this cytotoxic injection safely.

Quick Tips

  • Keep blood-count, liver, and heart monitoring appointments.
  • Report fever, unusual bruising, bleeding, breathlessness, or swelling promptly.
  • The urine may temporarily look blue-green after treatment, but report any concern to the oncology team.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe suppression of blood cells, infection, bleeding, heart problems, or other serious effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Mitoxantrone interferes with genetic material in abnormal cells, which can slow their growth.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can increase blood-count suppression or heart-related effects. Tell your oncology team about all medicines, supplements and herbal products you use. In particular, mention other chemotherapy, heart-affecting medicines, and medicines that suppress the immune system.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interactions have been reported.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
