Medical Description

Clozen NM cream is a topical antimicrobial and steroid cream. It contains five ingredients, Clobetasol, a potent corticosteroid; Miconazole, an imidazole antifungal agent; Gentamicin, a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic; Chlorocresol is a disinfectant effect along with zinc which is an astringent. It is used to treat various chronic skin infections. This cream is for external use only. The course of treatment should be completed for best results. Side effects like itching, irritation and dryness can be observed but are usually temporary. If these side effects do not go away, consult your doctor.

Dosage

Overdose

As this cream is for external use only, an overdose of this medication is unlikely. However, if you have accidentally ingested the cream, contact your physician or immediately rush to the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed a dose, apply the cream as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost the time for the next dose, skip the application of missed dose. Do not apply twice the amount of cream.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Clobetasol works through different mechanisms to control pain, infection and inflammatory processes in the skin. Miconazole interferes with the fungal cell membrane and gentamicin, stopping the synthesis of proteins in the bacteria and killing them. Zinc provides a soothing effect and also protects the skin.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Ritonavir and itraconazole can reduce the effects of corticosteroids
  • Chlorocresol is not compatible with calcium chloride, codeine phosphate, diamorphine hydrochloride, papaveretum, quinine hydrochloride, methylcellulose and non-ionic surfactants such as cetomacrogol 1000 and polysorbate 80
  • Gentamicin increases the effects of ether and other muscle relaxants
  • Methoxyflurane and gentamicin can damage the kidneys
  • Indometacin increases plasma clearance in newborn babies
  • Oral anticoagulants and gentamicin can cause bleeding/clotting problems
  • Neostigmine or pyridostigmine can cause opposite effect to Gentamicin
  • Botulinum toxin and gentamicin can increase the risk of toxic effects
  • Cephalon and cephaloridine, colistin, vancomycin, viomycin, aminoglycosides such as streptomycin, amphotericin B, Cytotoxics like cisplatin, Loop diuretics, e.g. ethacrynic acid and frusemide can damage kidney function when given with gentamicin

Other general Interactions

  • Long term use of this medicine should be avoided as it may lead to suppression of the adrenal gland
  • Avoid long term application of this product on the face
  • Long term application of this medicine can cause flares/ rebound infection
  • Medications damaging the ears and kidneys respectively should be avoided with Gentamicin
  • Liver and kidney function tests should be monitored before, during and after the use of gentamicin for the risk of adverse effects
  • Inner ear function should be monitored in patients on Gentamicin
  • Prolonged treatment of Gentamicin should be avoided
