Medical Description
Clonam Tab contains Clonazepam as its active ingredient. It belongs to the group of medicines known as antiepileptics. It is primarily used in the treatment of psychiatric ailments like anxiety disorders, panic disorders, epileptic fits or seizures and some cases of mild sleep disorders.
Anxiety disorders present themselves as deep, strong and sustained feelings of worry, fear and indecisiveness in daily life activities, hampering a person's social and mental progress. It has a strong tendency to cause depression. Epilepsy is a brain disorder caused by overactivity in the brain tissues and is characterised by seizures and uncontrolled body movements.
Clonazepam belongs to the group of benzodiazepines and acts by regulating chemicals in the brain to reduce brain activity. It may cause side effects like dizziness, fatigue, headache, confusion and depression.
Clonam is an oral tablet to be taken with or without food. Clonam Tab can be prescribed for patients under 18 based on their health and weight. This medication carries the risk of habit formation over prolonged use, therefore regular monitoring of patients, especially with a known history of substance abuse, is a must.

Talk to your doctor if
- You experience any allergy after taking Clonam Tab like rashes, hives or swelling on the face.
- You want to increase/decrease the dose of the medication.
- You want to stop taking Clonam Tab.
- Your everyday life is disrupted due to severe side effects.
Directions for Use
- Clonam Tab is taken orally with/without food and as many times as prescribed by your doctor after evaluation of your condition.
- Do not chew or crush the tablet in powder form.
- Care should be taken to take the medication at the same time every day.
- Do not change the dose without consultation with your physician. Do not stop taking Clonam suddenly as it may cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, headaches, and sleep issues.
- It is advised to always check for the expiry date before starting the medication.
- It may be prescribed to patients below 18 years based on their condition and weight.
- Do not share the medication with anyone else you know who has any depression/ anxiety issues. Medical consultation is a must for this medication.
Storage and disposal
It should always be stored at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. It should be kept away from children and pets at home.
The disposal of any unused Clonam Tab should always be along with other medical waste. Any unused medication should not be drained away in sinks or in washrooms. Do not throw away Clonam Tab along with other household waste.
Dosage
Overdose
Overdose of Clonam Tab can be accidental due to taking extra medication to make up for missed doses/ taking extra doses when the prescribed dose is not working for you/ intentional.
Overdose of Clonam Tab can cause drowsiness, confused thinking and loss of consciousness; it may lead to coma if not appropriately managed. Any known overdose cases with Clonam Tab should be immediately reported to the emergency department of your nearest healthcare provider.
Clonam Tab may carry the risk of abuse over prolonged use; therefore, all patients taking this medication should be closely monitored regularly.
Missed a Dose
Clonam Tab has to be taken every day at around the same time. If you miss a dose of Clonam Tab, you can take the missed dose as soon as you realise that you have missed the dose. If the next scheduled dose is only a few hours away, then it is advised not to take the missed dose and directly take the next scheduled dose and then continue as usual. Do not double your dose without consulting your physician. Inform your physician about any missed dose/doses.

How Does It Work?
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine, and it acts by binding itself to specific GABA receptors in the brain, thus increasing its activity to stop other neurotransmitters from sending signals to the brain. It helps to reduce the overactivity/excitability of the brain.
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is known as the relaxant of the central nervous system, and it helps make the patient calm and have a good sleep.
Thus, Clonam relieves symptoms of anxiety and decreases brain activity to help with seizures and sleep problems.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Opioids like oxycodone can cause breathing difficulties, which if not managed properly can be fatal.
- NSAIDs like aspirin and anticoagulants like warfarin can increase the risk of bleeding episodes.
- Sedatives/hypnotics can increase the risk of breathing problems.
- Cimetidine and Clonam Tabs may cause severe side effects like confusion, dizziness and fatigue.
- Rifampicin (anti-tuberculosis) can cause severe liver problems.
- Sodium oxybate and Clonam Tab may cause serious side effects like breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, coma, or even more fatal.

- Clonam Tab has no reported cases of adverse food reactions.
