Medical Description

Amlokind-AT Tablet is used for the treatment of high blood pressure and angina pectoris, a condition characterised by chest pain, tightness and squeezing in the chest radiating towards the shoulders, arms and neck. It contains a combination of two medicines amlodipine and atenolol. It is an antihypertensive medicine. Amlokind-AT works by lowering the blood pressure, heart rate and contractility of heart muscles. Patients with kidney and liver function problems and the elderly should be very cautious while taking this medicine. High blood pressure is a critical health condition that if not treated well can affect other organs and can impose other health conditions. Hence, it is essential to take your anti-hypertensive medicines on time along with adequate dietary and lifestyle modifications. It can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking this medicine unless asked to do so by the doctor. Before using Amlokind AT tablet, inform the doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about your detailed medical history.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to this amlodipine, atenolol or any of the ingredient of Amlokind AT.
If you have any heart disorder like heart failure problem, irregular heartbeat and heart blockage.
If you have a hormone-secreting tumour in the adrenal gland (Pheochromocytoma).
If you are suffering from metabolic acidosis, a condition when the body produces so much acid.
If you have a blood circulation problem due to which affects the blood supply to different body parts.
If you have low blood pressure and slow heart rate problem.
If you have experienced shock due to heart attack.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Do not take tablet Amlokind AT if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, as it can harm the developing baby. If you get pregnant while taking this medicine, inform your doctor. You will be switched to a safer alternative therapy.

Breast Feeding

It is not advised to breastfeed during the treatment. It can harm the newborn baby.

Driving

You should be cautious while driving if you are taking this medicine, especially in starting of the treatment. You may feel dizzy and sleepy after taking this medicine. Therefore, it would be better to avoid driving.

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol during the treatment. It can cause adverse effects along with this medicine. Consuming alcohol when you have a blood pressure problem is not advisable as alcohol can lower the blood pressure.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You have a liver or kidney problem.
You experience that your heart condition is getting worse.
You are an older person, pregnant or breastfeeding.
You are suffering from respiratory tract infections like asthma or obstruction of airways.
You have a planned surgery or operation.
You are suffering from high or low blood sugar level.
During treatment, you develop a thyroid disorder.

Directions for Use

Take Amlokind-AT as a whole with a sufficient amount of water with or without food.
Try to take this medicine at the same time every day for better blood pressure control.

Storage and disposal

Store this medicine at room temperature. Protect it from direct sunlight and moisture.
Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose of Amlokind-AT Tablets include laziness, a respiratory disorder like wheezing sound, sick sinus, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, constriction of airways and low blood sugar level.
In case of an overdose, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. Overdose of this medicine can sometimes lead to heart failure.

Missed a Dose

Do not take a double dose if you have missed a dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember. It would be best if you never miss a dose of blood pressure medicine as it can lead to serious side effects like sudden fall in blood pressure and associated symptoms such as fainting, lightheadedness, dizziness, dehydration etc.

Interactions with other drugs

Effect

It is not safe to take Amlokind-AT tablet with Verapamil, because both slow the electrical signal through your heart and weaken its squeeze, just by different routes. Together they can drop your heartbeat dangerously low or stop the signal getting through at all.

Advice

This combination is generally avoided. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe breathlessness or a very slow pulse.

Effect

It is not safe to take Amlokind-AT tablet with Salbutamol, because the atenolol in the tablet blocks the very airway switches your reliever inhaler needs to open your breathing. Your inhaler can fail to work exactly when you most need it in an asthma attack.

Advice

Amlokind-AT tablet is usually avoided if you have asthma. Seek emergency help if your inhaler stops working.

Effect

The amlodipine in Amlokind-AT tablet slows your liver's ability to break down Simvastatin, so levels of this cholesterol medicine climb above what the dose intends. Muscle pain becomes more likely, and rarely the muscle breakdown can damage your kidneys.

Advice

Simvastatin is usually limited to a lower daily dose with amlodipine. Report muscle aches, tenderness or dark urine.

Effect

Taking Amlokind-AT tablet with the painkiller Ibuprofen works against your treatment, because Ibuprofen makes your body hold on to salt and water by blocking the natural chemicals your kidneys use to flush them out. Your blood pressure creeps back up instead of coming down.

Advice

Avoid regular Ibuprofen; paracetamol is usually preferable. Check your blood pressure if you need it for more than a few days.

Effect

Clarithromycin blocks the liver enzyme that removes the amlodipine in Amlokind-AT tablet, so amlodipine builds up in your blood. Your blood pressure can drop further than intended, and this pairing has put older patients in hospital with dangerously low pressure.

Advice

Watch for dizziness on standing during the antibiotic course. Tell your doctor if you feel faint.

Effect

The atenolol in Amlokind-AT tablet hides the usual warning signs of low blood sugar and also slows your liver releasing its stored sugar to pull you back up. Low blood sugar from Glimepiride becomes both harder to spot and slower to fix.

Advice

Check your levels more frequently and keep glucose within reach at all times.

Effect

Digoxin slows the electrical relay station in your heart, and the atenolol in Amlokind-AT tablet slows that same relay by cutting the speed-up signals reaching it. The two effects add up and can leave your heartbeat too slow.

Advice

Your pulse may need checking. Report dizziness, fainting or a pulse below your usual rate.

Effect

The antifungal Itraconazole slows your liver's ability to clear the amlodipine in Amlokind-AT tablet out of your blood. The blood-pressure lowering effect is amplified, which commonly leaves people dizzy and with swollen ankles.

Advice

Monitor your blood pressure during the antifungal course. Report marked dizziness or new leg swelling.

Effect

The shakiness and racing pulse that warn you your blood sugar is dropping are alarm signals the atenolol in Amlokind-AT tablet blocks, while Insulin keeps pushing sugar down regardless. Low blood sugar can build towards confusion before you get any warning at all.

Advice

Test your blood sugar more often, especially before driving. Learn to recognise sweating and confusion.

Effect

The water tablet Furosemide reduces the amount of fluid in your circulation while Amlokind-AT tablet relaxes your blood vessels and slows your heart. The combined drop in blood pressure can leave you lightheaded, especially when you stand up.

Advice

Rise slowly from sitting or lying. Report persistent dizziness or any fainting episode.

Interactions with food items

Grapefruit, apple and orange juice should be avoided for at least 4 hours of taking this medicine. It can affect the absorption of this medicine.

Do not stop taking Amlokind-AT tablet until and unless your doctor advises you. If you stop taking this medicine, it can lead to a sudden increase in your blood pressure, which can be very dangerous. The doctor will gradually decrease the dose as per the need.
