Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Salmeterol is a selective long-acting beta-adrenoceptor agonist that produces a longer duration of bronchodilation, which works by relaxing muscles of the airways. In addition, fluticasone has a glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory action that relieves the symptoms of COPD, making breathing easier.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of non-selective or selective beta-blockers may weaken or antagonize the effect of salmeterol
  • Simultaneous treatment of steroids, diuretics and xanthine derivatives may potentiate the acute severe asthma
  • Highly potent cytochrome CYP34A inhibitors like ritonavir increased the plasma concentrations of fluticasone
  • Co-administration of ketoconazole and salmeterol increases the plasma salmeterol exposure
  • Co-administration of erythromycin and salmeterol significantly increases the exposure of salmeterol

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also known as COPD, is a group of lung diseases that block the airflow making it difficult to breathe. People may experience shortness of breath, dry cough, wheezing, fatigue and chest pressure.

You should not smoke as it may worsen the pre-existing condition. Even after the symptoms are relieved, you should avoid smoking as it is one of the leading causes of COPD.

You should not stop using this medication even when your symptoms are relieved. If you stop the medication abruptly, the symptoms might come back.

You should never give your medication to anyone unless prescribed by the doctor.
