Medical Description

Risdone Plus Tablet contains a combination of two active ingredients, namely risperidone and trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride. It is taken orally, and is commonly prescribed for conditions such as schizophrenia, mania, and to control acute manic episodes that affect patients with bipolar disorder. These conditions are considered secondary to an imbalance in the levels of certain chemical mediators in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine. Risperidone acts on this directly as it is a potent atypical antipsychotic. Trihexyphenidyl Hydrochloride compliments this by controlling the associated abnormal movements by its anticholinergic action. Risdone Plus Tablet is prescribed as a single or twice daily dose (rarely thrice a day). Due to its sedative propensity (increased sleep or dizziness), it is advisable to be taken at night. The dose, frequency and duration of medication is to be followed strictly as per the doctor’s advice. Any resumption or abrupt discontinuation of Risdone Plus Tablet should be done only after informing the treating doctor as it could increase the severity of the underlying condition. The doctor should be informed of the ongoing medications (to avoid interactions with other medicines), current and future pregnancy status, breastfeeding, and the precise age in young individuals.

Alcohol

The consumption of risperidone and trihexyphenidyl that forms the active ingredient of Risdone Plus Tablet has shown to induce a sedative effect on the patient, leading to increased drowsiness. Alcohol by itself is essentially a depressant of the central nervous system. Hence, it can cause further damage when consumed with Risdone Plus. Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Risdone Plus Tablet is briskly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, reaching maximum concentration in blood within one to two hours. It is metabolised by the liver and is circulated primarily in the bound form before being excreted by the kidney. This makes it important to know about any liver or kidney abnormality before administering the medication as it can affect the dosing. The active component of the medicine, risperidone, acts by opposing the action of serotonin and dopamine (chemical mediators of brain function) by targeting their receptors, and thereby recalibrating the imbalance in their levels. It exhibits fewer side effects and is more potent as compared to a typical antipsychotic owing to its higher affinity for histamine and adrenergic receptor H1. This makes Risdone Plus Tabletmore effective in controlling the acute and chronic chemical imbalances with fewer movement related and cholinergic side effects.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Risdone Plus interacts with medicines that are metabolised by the same hydroxylation mechanism in the liver, or those that are primarily metabolised or excreted by the kidney. These include:
  • Other antipsychotics like Clozapine and Carbamazepine as they can potentiate the side effects of Risdone Plus Tablet and affect the dose adjustment.
  • Certain antihypertensives, like atenolol, as they can further reduce your blood pressure and cause associated side effects like headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting episodes, if taken with Risdone plus Tablet.
  • Risdone Plus Tablet can reduce the effect of Levo-dopa and cause drowsiness.
  • Antiretrovirals (HIV medications) like Indinavir and Ritonavir can increase the levels of risperidone in the body, when taken along with Risdone Plus Tablet, subsequently requiring dose adjustment and frequent monitoring by your doctor.
  • Risdone Plus Tablet when taken with Chlorpromazine, Amantadine or Amitriptyline may increase side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, heat intolerance, flushing, and decreased sweating. This is particularly more debilitating in the elderly population.
  • Taking Risdone Plus Tablet with Disopyramide or Quinidine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm, sodium, magnesium and potassium imbalance in blood, and other heart diseases that may be serious and potentially life-threatening.
  • Antituberculosis medications like Rifampicin, Rifampin, or Isoniazid taken along with Risdone Plus Tablet can affect your liver and cause toxicity of either of the medications, requiring dose adjustment by your doctor.
  • Anti seizure medications like Phenytoin, when taken with Risdone Plus Tablet, can cause dizziness, confusion, dizziness, impairment in thinking and judgement, and motor coordination.

Interactions with food items

  • Risdone Plus Tablet has been shown to interact with alcohol, causing increased addiction and drowsiness when consumed together, or at a short time interval. It is advisable to prohibit alcohol consumption when on medication. Kindly consult your doctor in case of any eventuality.
