Medical Description

Prumpin tablet is a prescription medication used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and phobic (fear) states. OCD is characterised by a pattern of repetitive behaviour and unwanted obsessive thoughts. Depression is a mood disorder characterised by a feeling of sadness, loss of interest, mood swings, hopelessness and loneliness etc. The active ingredient in Prumpin tablets is Clomipramine, an antidepressant that regulates the chemical messengers, serotonin and norepinephrine. These chemical messengers are responsible for balancing mood and behaviour. The doctor's direction for use of Prumpin tablets should be strictly followed. It should not be taken without consulting a doctor as there are many side effects associated with this medicine. Side effects of Prumpin tablets include drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, diarrhoea or constipation, and decreased sexual drive. Sudden discontinuation of Prumpin tablets may cause clinical worsening of the condition or withdrawal symptoms.

  • As per CDSCO, Prumpin tablet is used to treat:
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Phobic states
  • Depression (when sedation is required)

Contraindications

  • Do not take Prumpin tablets, or use caution:
  • If you are allergic to the main component of Prumpin tablets, i.e. Clomipramine.
  • If you take antidepressants like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), anti-anxiety, or sedative medication.
  • If you recently had a heart attack.
  • If you have acute angle glaucoma (an increase of fluid pressure in the eyes)
  • If you have recurrent suicidal thoughts or ideation.
  • If you have a history of seizure disorder and are currently under treatment for it.
  • If you have brain damage or a head injury.
  • If you have liver and kidney disease.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • If you are a nursing mother.

Some clinical data indicates that some content of medicine may pass into breast milk, so this medicine should be used with caution in breastfeeding women.   • You are pregnant or planning to conceive during treatment.

  • You use Ayurvedic medicines, vitamins, or other health supplements.

Directions for Use

  • Take Prumpin tablets as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take Prumpin tablets with or without food or as prescribed by your doctor.
  • It is advised to take Prumpin tablets before bedtime as it can make you feel sleepy.
  • Take Prumpin tablets on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day to maintain its constant level in the body.
  • Consume the whole tablet orally with a glass of water. Do not break the tablet.
  • Do not take Prumpin tablets with other medications without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not stop taking Prumpin tablets abruptly, as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms.
  • Do not exceed the dosage of Prumpin tablets on your own, even if you cannot feel its effects.

Storage and disposal

Store Prumpin tablets at room temperature in a cool and dry area, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medication away from the reach of children and pet animals in a locked cabin. Do not remove the medicine from its original packing. Do not flush Prumpin tablets down the toilet or throw away the medicines via household waste. Dispose of the expired medicine immediately via biochemical waste. Do not consume this medication after the expiry date stated on the label.

Prumpin tablet overdose symptoms may include fainting, somnolence, impaired motor functions, dizziness, poor coordination, muscle weakness, loss of balance, low blood pressure (hypotension), shallow breathing (hypoventilation), and coma. If you experience these overdose symptoms, seek emergency medical treatment from the nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed a dose of Prumpin tablet, it is advised to take it as soon as possible. If the duration missed is too long and it is almost time for the next dose, it's recommended to skip the missed dose and go back to the regular schedule. Do not take both doses together as it may lead to overdose side effects. Talk to your doctor If you need more information.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of Prumpin tablets with other central nervous system (CNS) depressants and opioids is strictly contraindicated, as it may cause respiratory depression, coma, and death.
  • Prumpin tablets should not be used concomitantly or within two weeks of using monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, selegiline, rasagiline, etc. It is potentially life-threatening.
  • Prumpin tablet interaction with antidepressants (like sertraline, fluoxetine, and paroxetine), painkillers (like morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, and codeine), and sleeping pills can increase drowsiness and fatigue.
  • Prumpin tablets can interact with birth control pills and oral contraceptives and reduce their effectiveness. It is advised to use other methods of contraception like condoms.
  • Prumpin tablet interaction with herbal products like St John's Wort can lead to life-threatening side effects.

Interactions with food items

  • Avoid consuming tyramine-rich foods such as cheese, milk, meat, chocolate, chicken liver, grapefruit juice, etc., while on treatment with Prumpin tablets.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Some data shows that consumption of Prumpin tablets may lead to weight gain if used for a long time. However, this varies from person to person and the condition of the disease. If you notice any weight changes, be more active, exercise regularly, and eat healthily.
It might take 4 to 6 weeks after starting treatment with Prumpin tablets before you see any improvements in your symptoms. Once you feel better, you are advised to continually take this medicine for several more months to prevent the symptoms from returning. Follow the doctor's advice properly.
