Medical Description

Oresta Tab contains Clobazam, which belongs to the benzodiazepines (BZDs) class of medicines, used to treat epilepsy (seizures/fits/convulsions) adjuvant to other anti-epileptic medicines. It has a sedative effect and decreases the excessive and abnormal activity of the brain cells. Oresta Tab should be taken at the same time of the day to maintain its consistent levels. It can be taken irrespective of food, with water. This tablet must be taken in dose, frequency and duration as prescribed by your doctor, because of its risk of habit-forming. Common side-effects of Oresta Tab are difficulty in swallowing or speech, coordination problems, tiredness, cough, joint pain, constipation, altered appetite, and vomiting. Serious side effects include urinary complaints, fever, breathing difficulty, mouth sores, rash, and blisters over the skin. You must visit the hospital emergency room in case of any severe side effects.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • Your're allergic to Oresta Tab or any other medicine.
  • You are on other medications or supplements.
  • You have self-harm tendencies, thoughts or behaviours.
  • You are suffering from major or minor illnesses, especially involving liver, kidney, or heart.

Directions for Use

  • Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and use Oresta Tab accordingly.
  • A doctor will mostly start you on a low dose therapy and gradually increase it weekly.
  • Your doctor may advise some blood tests to determine the suitable dose as some people respond differently to Clobazam depending on their genetic factors.
  • Continue to take this medicine unless told by the doctor to stop it.

Storage and disposal

Keep Oresta Tab safely in the packet it was received and away from children. No one else should be able to consume it accidentally or purposefully. Store at room temperature under 30°C, away from moisture and heat. Unwanted medicines should be discarded specifically, ensuring that pets, children and other people don't consume them. Don't flush the medicine down the toilet.

Dosage

Overdose

Oresta Tab, if taken in high doses compared to what has been prescribed to you, can cause unconsciousness, seizure episodes, and breathing difficulty in many cases. In such a situation, immediately call emergency services. Consume it at a fixed time every day to minimise overdose in the body.

Missed a Dose

If you've missed a dose of Oresta Tab, take it as soon as you remember. But, if it's already time for the next dose, you should skip the missed dose and take the next dose as per the regular schedule. Do not consume double doses to make up for the missed one.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Oresta Tab is a Benzodiazepine. It increases the action of GABA, a chemical messenger involved in suppressing the abnormal activity of the brain's nerve cells. Thus, resulting in a relaxing effect, anti-epileptic action and reduced anxiety. In seizures, Oresta Tab slows down the abnormal electrical impulses in the brain.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Taking Oresta Tab with certain other medicines can alter the effect of either of them and lead to unpleasant side effects.
  • Antivirals like Abacavir, Adefovir can keep the levels of Oresta Tab high in the blood and may result in overdose unknowingly.
  • Amisulpride and Clobazam, if used together, increase Amisulpride levels, which can result in abnormal heart rate.
  • Hormonal contraceptives don't work effectively while on Oresta Tab.

Interactions with food items

  • Unless your doctor specifies any food restrictions, you can continue your regular diet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, Oresta Tab is habit-forming if taken on a long term basis. Higher dose and duration is linked with a high risk of dependence. Also, people addicted to other substances like alcohol or nicotine or other forms of medicines have a higher risk of developing a habit. Hence, this medicine is usually given for a short while.

Oresta Tab has a fast action. It quickly absorbs into the blood within minutes and reaches its maximum levels within 30 minutes. It stays at that level for up to 4 hours, and later levels drop. Therefore, usually, one or two daily doses are prescribed.

If you're taking Oresta Tab for the past few weeks and stop it altogether, it will lead to withdrawal symptoms. These may include thoughts of self-harm or self-killing, loss of sleep, restlessness, confusion, etc. Don't stop it until your doctor tells you to do so.
