Medical Description

Optiviral eye eye ointment is an antiviral medicine used to treat viral eye infections caused by the herpes simplex virus. Its active ingredient is acyclovir, which stops the virus from multiplying in the eye.

Contraindications

Pregnancy

Although eye ointment has minimal absorption into the body, inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Your doctor will assess the benefits and risks before recommending this treatment.

Breast Feeding

Since eye ointment is applied topically with minimal systemic absorption, it is generally considered safe during breastfeeding. However, consult your doctor before use.

Driving

Temporary blurred vision may occur immediately after applying Optiviral. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision clears. Allow time for vision to return to normal before driving.

Alcohol

Alcohol does not interact with eye ointment. However, if you experience discomfort or vision changes, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Directions for Use

For external use only in the eyes. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying. Gently pull down the lower eyelid and place a small amount of eye ointment inside the eye as directed by your doctor. Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes to allow the medicine to spread evenly. Wipe away any excess ointment with a clean tissue. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medicine unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Storage and disposal

Store this eye ointment at room temperature away from heat and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. If the medicine changes colour or becomes cloudy, do not use it. Dispose of unused medicine according to local pharmacy guidelines.

Continue treatment for at least 3 days after the eye appears healed to prevent the infection from returning.
Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this may worsen irritation and delay healing.

If you missed a scheduled application, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double amount of ointment to compensate for the missed one.
