Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Although eye ointment has minimal absorption into the body, inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Your doctor will assess the benefits and risks before recommending this treatment.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Since eye ointment is applied topically with minimal systemic absorption, it is generally considered safe during breastfeeding. However, consult your doctor before use.

Driving

Driving

Temporary blurred vision may occur immediately after applying Optiviral. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision clears. Allow time for vision to return to normal before driving.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol does not interact with eye ointment. However, if you experience discomfort or vision changes, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Directions for Use

For external use only in the eyes. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying. Gently pull down the lower eyelid and place a small amount of eye ointment inside the eye as directed by your doctor. Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes to allow the medicine to spread evenly. Wipe away any excess ointment with a clean tissue. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medicine unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Storage and disposal

Store this eye ointment at room temperature away from heat and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. If the medicine changes colour or becomes cloudy, do not use it. Dispose of unused medicine according to local pharmacy guidelines.

Quick Tips

  • Continue treatment for at least 3 days after the eye appears healed to prevent the infection from returning.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this may worsen irritation and delay healing.
  • Do not share eye ointment with others, even if they have similar eye symptoms.
  • Wash your hands regularly before and after touching your eyes to reduce the spread of infection.
  • Wear sunglasses if your eyes are sensitive to bright light during treatment.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose of eye eye ointment is highly unlikely when applied to the eye. If you accidentally swallow a large amount, contact your doctor or visit the nearest hospital immediately for guidance.

Missed a Dose

If you missed a scheduled application, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double amount of ointment to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Acyclovir works by interfering with the virus's ability to replicate. Once inside infected cells, the medicine is converted into an active form that blocks the enzyme the virus needs to copy itself. This stops the infection from spreading and allows the body's immune system to clear the virus more quickly.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Although absorption into the body is very low with eye ointment, inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially if you are also taking oral or injectable acyclovir. Some systemic medicines may interact, and your doctor will advise if this is relevant for your eye treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Eye ointment should not be swallowed. If you accidentally swallow a significant amount, contact your doctor or visit the nearest hospital immediately for guidance.
