Medical Description
Human Mixtard 30/70 100IU is used to control blood glucose in people with diabetes who require insulin. It contains human insulin in a fixed mixture, thirty per cent soluble insulin for rapid cover at mealtimes and seventy per cent isophane insulin for slower background cover through the day.
Insulin allows glucose to move from the bloodstream into muscle and fat cells for energy and stops the liver releasing more glucose. Replacing it lowers blood sugar and prevents the long-term damage to eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels that uncontrolled diabetes causes.
Roll and tip the vial gently until the liquid is uniformly cloudy before every dose, then inject under the skin about thirty minutes before a meal. Never inject into a vein, never shake the vial hard, and always rotate the injection site.
Low blood sugar is the main risk and can develop quickly, causing sweating, trembling, hunger, a pounding heart, confusion and, if untreated, loss of consciousness. Always carry fast-acting sugar and treat a low immediately with fifteen grams of glucose.
Store unopened vials in the refrigerator and never freeze them; keep the vial in use at room temperature away from heat and light. Discard any insulin that looks clumped, frosted or fails to mix evenly, and never skip a meal after injecting.

- Do not stop insulin during illness; requirements usually rise, so check glucose more often and seek advice.
- Never change your insulin brand, type or strength without medical supervision.
Dosage
Overdose
- Excess insulin will lead to low blood sugar levels, called hypoglycemia
- Symptoms like dizziness, fainting, sweating and tremors may be seen
- If you have the blood glucometer with you, test immediately and confirm
- Whether or not you test your levels, it is important to take some glucose water/juice/eat sugar or chocolates immediately and then rush to your doctor.
Missed a Dose
- Missed dose may lead to high blood sugar levels which can cause symptoms like feeling thirsty, excessive urination, loss of appetite, drowsiness, fruity smell from breath, etc.
- If you missed any dose of medicine take it as soon as you remember
- If it's time for your next dose then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule
- Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate the missed one as taking double dose can cause a drastic fall in blood glucose which can be dangerous.
How does this medicine work?
- Insulin is crucial to allow entry of blood glucose into each cell of the body
- Inside the cell, this glucose is used as fuel
- In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the body fails to produce adequate insulin
- This leads to glucose accumulating in the blood and cause high blood glucose
- This medicine lowers blood sugars by stimulating glucose uptake by cells, tissue and muscles, especially by skeletal muscles and fat and by inhibiting glucose production by the liver.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- You may have symptoms of low blood sugar if you are taking other medicines for diabetes, depression (fluoxetine), medicines for fever and pain (salicylates), ramipril, lisinopril
- You may have high blood sugar if you are taking oral contraceptives, thiazide, steroids, thyroxine, medicines used to treat severe diarrhoea and abnormal growth of body organs like octreotide, lanreotide
- If you are taking a medicine pioglitazone to treat diabetes, be cautious, as some cases of heart attack and heart failure have been reported
- Some medicines block your body's response to low blood sugar, so you may not experience symptoms like headache, hunger pangs, sweating, anxiety when your blood sugar drops. This can lead to a serious fall in blood sugar. Inform your doctor if you are on medicines like Betablockers (Metoprolol, Propranolol, Atenolol), Clonidine, Guanethidine and Reserpine.
Interactions with food items
- Meal timing is part of the treatment with this insulin. Inject about thirty minutes before eating, and never inject and then skip, delay or greatly reduce the meal, as a low blood sugar will follow.
- Keep the carbohydrate content of your meals reasonably consistent from day to day. A much smaller meal than usual for the same dose is a common cause of a hypo.
- Always carry fast-acting sugar such as glucose tablets, sweets or juice. Treat a low with about fifteen grams, wait fifteen minutes, recheck, and then eat a longer-acting snack if your next meal is not due.
- Alcohol should never be taken on an empty stomach. Eat alongside it, keep the quantity modest, and check your glucose before bed, as the risk of an overnight low is real.
- Plan for exercise, which lowers glucose during and for many hours afterwards. You may need extra carbohydrate beforehand or a dose reduction; discuss this with your doctor.
- During illness, do not stop your insulin even if you are eating little. Requirements usually rise with fever and infection. Check glucose more often, take small carbohydrate-containing drinks and contact your doctor for advice.
