Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Do not take this medicine while breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

This medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness initially. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

You must completely avoid all forms of alcohol, including beer, wine, spirits, non-alcoholic or low-alcohol beers, colognes, perfumes, aftershaves, and hand sanitizers containing alcohol. Even trace amounts can trigger a severe disulfiram-alcohol reaction.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Take it at the same time each day, preferably in the morning. This medicine should only be started after confirming complete abstinence from alcohol for at least 12 hours. Follow your doctor's directions carefully.

Dosage

Overdose

Overdose may cause severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme coordination loss, or unusual drowsiness. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Disulfiram blocks an enzyme (acetaldehyde dehydrogenase) that helps break down alcohol in the body. When alcohol is consumed, toxic levels of acetaldehyde build up, causing unpleasant effects like flushing, nausea, headache, and vomiting. This reaction deters people from drinking alcohol.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way this medicine works. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking. In particular, inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, seizure medicines such as phenytoin, or medicines for tuberculosis, as this medicine can raise their levels in your body. Do not take this medicine if you have recently taken metronidazole.

Interactions with food items

You must avoid all forms of alcohol, including beer, wine, liqueurs, and non-alcoholic beers. Also avoid foods containing alcohol like certain desserts, vinegars, and sauces. Avoid cough syrups, mouthwashes, and other liquid medications that contain alcohol.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Disulfiram starts working from the very first dose. Your body will react to even small amounts of alcohol with unpleasant effects within minutes to hours of alcohol consumption.
A disulfiram-alcohol reaction causes flushing of the face, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, chest pain, and mental confusion. Severe reactions can be life-threatening, so alcohol must be strictly avoided.
