Brintellix Tablet is a prescription medication primarily used to treat major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder or depression is a mood disorder is characterized by episodes of sadness, loss of interest, mood swings, hopelessness, weight changes, etc. Brintellix Tablet contains Vortioxetine as a key ingredient. It is an antidepressant class of medicine. It works by elevating serotonin (a natural chemical produced by the nerve cells) in the brain, responsible for elevating mood, improving energy, and reducing nervousness. Brintellix Tablet should be taken in dosage and duration as advised by your doctor. There are also many side effects associated with the consumption of this medicine, so the dosage must be carefully monitored from time to time. Do not stop consuming this medicine suddenly without consulting a doctor, as it can cause clinical worsening of your condition or lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Brintellix Tablet overdose can result in symptoms like nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, extreme sleepiness, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, slowing of heart rate, double vision, difficulty breathing, cardiac arrest, ECG changes (change in heart functioning) and coma. If you experience any of these symptoms or in case of overdose, immediately seek emergency medical treatment from a nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you’ve missed a dose of the Brintellix Tablet, take it as you remember. If it's already time to take the next scheduled dose, then take the next scheduled dose. Do not double doses as it can cause overdose side effects. Talk to your doctor if you have any further queries regarding this issue.

How Does It Work?

Brintellix Tablet contains Vortioxetine (20 mg) as an active ingredient. Vortioxetine is an antidepressant class of medicine. It works mainly by increasing the amount of a natural substance called serotonin in the brain that helps maintain mood and mental balance. Increased level of serotonin directly leads to improved mood and relieve depressive symptoms.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription medications, herbal products, vitamins, and nutritional supplements you are taking or plan to take to reduce the chance of Drug Interaction. Many medicines can interact with Brintellix Tablet, making it less effective or increasing side effects. This includes-
  • Antidepressants like isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, Selegiline, Rasagiline, lithium, triptans, buspirone, amphetamines are strictly contraindicated as it may cause severe reactions
  • Interaction with metoprolol can lead to excessive bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Interaction with antidepressants, antipsychotics (pimozide, haloperidol), and antihistamines can prolong QT interval(measurement on ECG) which alter heart rhythm
  • NSAIDs, Aspirin, and other medications which affect coagulation may interact. They can increase the risk of bleeding
  • Azole antifungals such as clarithromycin (e.g., fluconazole, fluvoxamine, omeprazole) may cause interaction and increase serum levels
  • Interaction with Herbal products like St john’s wort can lead to life-threatening side effects

Interactions with food items

  • You should avoid consuming Brintellix Tablet with cola drinks caffeine-containing food items- tea, coffee, and chocolates as it can result in serotonin syndrome (high levels of serotonin).
