Medical Description
Amaryl M1 tablet is an oral anti-diabetic medicine. It contains glimepiride and metformin as its active ingredients. Glimepiride works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin. Insulin is a hormone that facilitates the movement of glucose from the bloodstream into the body's cells, where it is used for energy. Metformin works in two ways: it reduces the amount of sugar absorbed from the intestine and decreases the liver's production of glucose. Together, these two mechanisms enhance the body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing cells to utilise blood glucose more efficiently and thereby lowering overall blood sugar levels. It is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition where blood sugar level rises above the normal range when it cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. This medicine helps lower elevated blood glucose levels.
You should follow a healthy diet and exercise along with the medicine. Amaryl M1 tablets must be taken as directed by your doctor and in the doses and duration prescribed. It should be taken with meals, preferably with the first meal of the day. It is important not to skip meals while on this medication, as this can increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Gemer 1mg tablet, Gluconorm G 1mg tablet, Glimestar M 1mg tablet and Zoryl M 1mg tablet also include glimepiride and metformin.
Before using the Amaryl M1 tablet, inform the doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding and about your detailed medical history. An individual with uncontrolled diabetes is at increased risk of various health complications such as eye, kidney and nerve problems, heart diseases and stroke.
This medication is not recommended for use in individuals with metabolic acidosis, severe infections, or a history of serious allergic reactions to its components. Common side effects can include headache, nausea, vomiting, and sleepiness. A significant risk with this medication is hypoglycemia, which can cause symptoms like headache, irritability, and confusion. It is essential to carry a source of sugar, such as juice or candy, to help manage such episodes. Avoid consuming alcohol while on this medication, as it can interfere with its effectiveness and increase the risk of serious complications like lactic acidosis.
