Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Alprazolam belongs to a class of medicines called Benzodiazepines. These medicines primarily act on the brain pathways to increase the action of a chemical messenger, otherwise known as a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). This medicine binds to the GABA-A receptors in the brain, thereby causing increased activity of GABA. This neurotransmitter’s effects on the brain are inhibitory and result in sedation, calming effects, muscle relaxation, etc. These effects of the medicine are used to treat anxiety and panic disorders in patients. Alprasafe reaches its maximum concentration about one to two hours after taking the tablet. It is metabolised in the liver and discharged by the kidney.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of this medication with opioids is contraindicated, as it may severely slow down breathing and can cause coma and death.
  • Medicines that are potent inhibitors of CYP3A can increase plasma concentrations of alprazolam, leading to increased side effects. Such medications should not be used concomitantly. Example: azole antifungals (ketoconazole), cimetidine, certain anti-depressants (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and nefazodone), macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin), seizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin), antihistamines, and muscle relaxants.
  • Inform your doctor regarding your current medications at the time of prescription of Alprasafe.
