Acivir powder for injection is given in hospital to treat serious infections caused by the herpes virus. This includes severe shingles and chickenpox in people with a weak immune system, serious first episodes of genital herpes, and herpes infection of the brain or in newborn babies. Its active ingredient is acyclovir (also spelt aciclovir), an antiviral medicine that stops the virus from multiplying in the body.
