Can I take Trazodone during pregnancy?
You should not take this medicine during pregnancy. It is because the safety of this medicine for use during pregnancy has not been established.

Breast Feeding

Can I take Trazodone while breastfeeding?
It is probably unsafe to take this medicine if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed as it is unknown whether this medicine passes into breast milk. Seek doctor’s advice.


Can I drive if I have consumed Trazodone?
Do not drive when taking this medicine.


Can I consume alcohol with Trazodone?
It is unsafe to drink alcohol with this medicine.

  • Have abnormally low levels of potassium (hypokalaemia), calcium (hypocalcaemia) or magnesium (hypomagnesaemia) in your blood
  • Have difficulties in passing urine or a reduced stream of urine
  • Have liver problems

Mode of Action of Trazodone

How Does It Work?

Depression occurs due to the imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain. This medicine regulates the imbalance of chemical neurotransmitters present in the brain and thus cures depression. Its anti-Serotonin property makes it effective in treating anxiety.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Zolpidem
  • Lorazepam
  • Citalopram
  • Cyclobenzaprine
  • Furosemide
  • Escitalopram
  • Carbamazepine
  • Digoxin
  • Phenytoin
  • Do not take this medicine within 14 days of taking a Monoamine Oxidase inhibitor, e.g., Linezolid, Isocarboxazid, etc.

Dietary Restrictions of Trazodone

Do not consume cheese or packed food when taking this medicine.

Dosage of Trazodone


Inform your doctor immediately in case of an overdose of Trazodone. It can be fatal when it is taken with alcohol, barbiturates or sedatives such as Diazepam (Valium).

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose, take it as early as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for a missed one.
