Molecule Description
Lafutidine reduces stomach acid production, which has a protective effect in patients with stomach and duodenal ulcers. It belongs to a class of medicines called ‘H2-receptor blockers’.
Uses
- Treatment of ulcers of the stomach and the small intestine (duodenum)
- Conditions where the stomach lining is disrupted (gastric mucosal lesions)
- Increased acidity when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD)
- To prevent inhalation or aspiration of food from the stomach or oesophagus into the lungs (aspiration pneumonia)
Contraindications
When should one not use Lafutidine
Allergy to Lafutidine, or any ingredient of the medicine, or other medicines of the same class.
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Constipation
- High uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia)
- Feeling unreal things to be real (hallucinations)
- Decreased hunger
- Enlargement of breasts in men (gynaecomastia)
- Liver problems (jaundice - yellowing of the skin, and eyes)

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Lafutidine blocks specific receptors (proteins) on the lining of the stomach that stimulate acid production and also increases the secretion of the protective layer of the stomach lining called mucin. By doing so, it decreases stomach acid production and helps in healing the ulcers of the stomach and small intestine.

Lafutidine should be taken at least one hour after the meals.
Dosage
Overdose
Accidental or unintentional overdose of Lafutidine may not be harmful. But in the presence of symptoms such as constipation, hallucinations, reduced hunger, yellowing of eyes or skin, consult your doctor.
Missed a Dose
- Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
- If your next dose is near, skip the missed dose and continue with the next dose as per schedule
- Do not take a higher or double dose to make up for the missed dose
- Ideally, there should be a 12-hour gap between two doses
