What are Disinfectants?

A disinfectant is a chemical agent that eliminates harmful germs like bacteria and viruses. It is not to be confused with sterilisation. The difference between sterilisation and disinfection is that sterilisation means killing all microorganisms.

What are Disinfectants used for?

A disinfectant essentially removes or destroys germs from inactive surfaces and is used to clean several types of surfaces at home, schools, colleges, offices as well as any other public places like shopping malls. A surface disinfectant solution is often diluted with some amounts of water and used to wipe floors, tabletops, countertops, tiled walls and other such surfaces.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfectant: It is a powerful disinfectant that can be used for cleaning toilets and other surfaces.
  • Iodophors Disinfectant: This is yet another industrial-grade disinfectant that is used in hospitals, wineries and breweries to clean bottles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best type of disinfectant that I can use for household purposes?

Alcohol, Phenolic and Quaternary ammonium disinfectants are the best types of disinfectants that can be safely used for household purposes. These disinfecting agents do not give off any harmful fumes. They are not highly corrosive and will not damage household surfaces like wood and tile.

Which is better for household use, disinfection or sterilization?

For household purposes, disinfection and sterilization are both necessary. However, disinfection is a more affordable option and can successfully help eliminate microorganisms on surfaces. Sterilisation, on the other hand, assists in killing all forms of microorganic life and can be used as an added measure after disinfection.

Which is better, disinfectant solution or disinfectant spray?

Both are equally potent in their purpose but a spray is a quick fix while using a solution and wiping surfaces is a more thorough process of disinfection.
