What is a hand sanitizer?

  • Hand sanitizer, also called hand rubs are leave-on products, intended to be used when soap and water are not available. These are left on and not rinsed off with water.
  • Hand sanitizers come in two forms, alcohol and non-alcohol based preparations and usually supplied as liquids & gels.
  • It helps you to avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of germs & associated illness to you and people around.

What are the benefits of using a hand sanitizer?

  • It is very simple to use and handy to carry along anywhere.
  • It is very helpful when soap and water are not available for handwashing, especially while being outdoors or travelling.
  • It acts quickly to kill the germs on the hands.
  • It can minimize the spread of infections via hands.
  • Water is not required.

How to use a sanitizer?

  • Apply

    : Pour a sufficient amount of hand sanitizer (around 2 pumps) on your palm.
  • Rub

    : Then rub your hands together, covering your entire hand including the fingers, until the sanitizer is absorbed entirely and your skin is dry.
  • You should not wipe or rinse the hand sanitizer before it dries as it may not work effectively against germs.

Are hand sanitizers a replacement for soap and water?

  • Hand sanitizers are not cleaning agents, nor a replacement for soap and water but as a complementary habit. Handwashing with soap and water is the most effective method of preventing bacteria, viruses and germs from spreading through our hands. Sanitizers are used when hand washing is not feasible.

How often should you use sanitizer?

There is no specific rule as such. However, a good rule of thumb is to sanitize your hands about once per hour, unless otherwise required for your job and whenever you do not have access to soap and water to wash your hands.

What precautions should I take while using a hand sanitizer?

  • Since it is highly inflammable, you should keep it away from fire or flame or gas stove.
  • It should be used for external use only.
  • In case of contact with your eye, you need to flush with enough water.
  • You should discontinue using it if you notice some skin irritation.
  • You should keep it out of reach of children and pets.
